Thought I'd share a little New Year's story with you while I'm remembering good times in the past.
Ten years ago, I decided to take my boys to New York City for New Year's Eve. I found out that the committee organizing the celebration was looking for international volunteers to carry the puppets during the 24 hour parade "Crossroads of the World". So I signed us up.
We had to be there almost a week in advance to practice with the others. There were over 2000 volunteers from around the world. We were practicing for three days. We met at the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd St. to get our instructions from the director.
When we weren't practicing, we did all kinds of NYC stuff. We saw a show with Liza Minnelli, saw a couple of Broadway shows "Annie Get Yer Gun" and "Damn Yankees" and then visited all the best sites. We even went skating at the Rockefeller Center.
The 24 hour parade started at midnight on December 30 with the parade having puppets from different countries as it turned midnight. Every hour on the hour, there was a celebration for the countries that had just had midnight.
The boys and I were in the parades at 8AM, 9AM, 10AM, 11AM, noon, 1PM and 2PM on December 31st. We helped to carry a city-block long Chinese dragon, Bali praying hands, an Indian elephant that was three stories tall, among others. Discovery Channel made a video of all the hourly parades and we were each given a copy. Jason and Robert were both on the centre stage at noon hour carrying the Shiva puppet.
After our duties as volunteers then we stood with the rest of the crowds in a special section reserved for the parade volunteers at the base of the building with the new ball that had been made by Waterford crystal.
Here is a link to a handful of great photos. Not mine but actually taken by a kiwi standing at a better vantage point for photos.

Happy New Year everyone! Creepy hugs for all! Thanks Deb for the Tribe message, I'll write you a proper response on the morrow! Drinks are on me, and I mean that literally, I spilled two full beers on me over the course of this drunken evening! But I managed to behave myself and I didn't get thrown out of the [actual] bar before midnight!

Hey, Gyre, if a pagan can't celebrate a Blue Moon, what would a pagan celebrate.
Happy Pagan New Year.
Wanders over to YG's and gets a slug of YG's camp coffee. Almost as good as Starbucks.
Good Morning 2010!

So my new darling invited me to a party of her cosmopolitan and urbane friends, truly a delight. After the new year was called in, people started going outside. I told her to wait and I would check it out. The full moon in the cloudy sky had formed a huge halo in the night sky. So I invited her out to see it. Thoroughly grounded, she just drawls "oh that means it's going to rain tomorrow". I asked her if maybe it's a harbinger of great blessings for the new year, and she said it could be that too. So I stole a kiss and flew home on wings.
