BLACK ROCK CITY 2010 MAP...
I was just curious but when does the "BLACK ROCK CITY 2010 MAP" become available? The BM website still only has the 2009 and older maps on it... or am I not seeing it?
Thanks!
I Hope Everyone had a Great New Years!

The maps of the city come out just before the event. You can count on the map being identical to 2009, with the exception of the ABC streets having new names related to the theme. For some reason, the names of the streets are held as a closely guarded secret by management. I think it's part of the aura and mystique in the building of excitement toward the event.
In the last few years, the theme for the next year has been announced just as the current years event was ending. My guess for this is that it keeps the excitement and momentum going and allows participants to starts planning, building and stocking for the next year. Prior to this change, the theme was announced just before the tickets went on sale.

Wasn't there an announcement last week they were ready for art grant applications?AntiM wrote:The theme camps must be placed before the map is out, and art installations and such, and the applications aren't even due yet.
I got this message last week:
"Subject: New Art Grant Application Process for 2010
Hear ye! Hear ye! The Burning Man grant committee is now accepting
applications for the 2010 grant season. In an effort to make the process
easier, we've created a new format -- an editable PDF. It asks all the same
questions and requires the same information as we have always wanted, but
now in a simple form. You can learn more and access the new PDF here.
(insert link to the PDF) This new format is the new, mandatory format for
applying for a grant. The deadline for grant application si 11:59 pm
February 1st. This is a hard deadline -- no late submissions will be
considered. You can read more about it here:
http://www.burningm an.com/installat ions/art_ guidelines. html
Also as part of this year's grant season, Burning Man is soliciting
applications for the plazas -- the 3:00, 4:30, 7:30 and 9:00. We've set
aside some funds from our grant budget to cover these locations. It's a
unique opportunity to create something interactive, something
thought-provoking, and something fun in the neighborhoods of Black Rock
City. There have been amazing pieces in the plazas from such award-winning
artists as David Best and Charlie Smith, and the pieces have been as
thought-provoking and whimsical as Black Rock City has ever seen. Here's an
image of a recent favorite -- Ketchup! by Bruce Bender.

In
addition, we are asking for grant applications for the Cafe portal. The Cafe
`Front Portal' Art is a specific art installation positioned just in front
of the entry to the Café as it faces The Man. Though named the Front Portal,
it is NOT necessary that this Art be a portal, arch, gateway or similar
shape. See below** for images ofsome Portal pieces from previous years. This
is the first year we are including the process for selecting the Café Front
Portal Art in the larger grant cycle – in the past these artists were
hand-picked by Café leadership by virtue of their familiarity with the Café
and prior playa works. Since 2000 (when David Best created the first Front
Portal) the art location has evolved away from the structure itself, with
large-scale Art proudly marking the front entrance to
the Center Camp Café. This is notto be confused with the Keyhole location,
the Front
Portal
is quite close to the Café structure. The Cafe portal position is a place of
honor in front of the Cafe. Here are some images of previous Café Front
Portal Art pieces:

The wind comes in with the planes.. so, once the map comes out you can see how the runway is lined up. Phil enlightened me last year & I was able to block the wind with my Van properly. thanks Phil!Homiesinheaven wrote:trying to figure out wind direction relative to BRC this year. do we know where on the playa BRC 2010 will be placed? they change the location relative to the playa every year right?

that's a great way to remember Boijoy! it looks like the wind blows in the same direction you're facing when you enter the gate. basically right down the middle of BRC. i also found this:

i thought they spun the area around more but it looks like they keep it pretty much the same and just scoot it down stream.

According to my completely non-obsessive Burning Man Countdown timer, there is about 85 days, 8 hours and 48minutes and 12 seconds (approximately) until I leave for the burn... Not that I'm counting down the minutes or anything
Here's hoping that time passes fast!!

I have a question for you guys. Looking at the gigapan map posted above, what are those groups of stuctures and cars outside of the city area? It appears that they are still within the perimeter. If the map is orientated on a north-south axis, two are due west of center camp. I assume the one southwest of the gate road is the walk-in camping area?
Just curious really. My best guess is that one is the airstrip center and the other may be a staging area for BLM and/or LE?

It's pointless to walk when it's past time to run.
