Gate Search

Post by CannotWait » Wed Jan 13, 2010 5:31 pm

In the survival guide, it says your vehicle will be searched. How long does this take? Who is performing the search? What are they looking for? How detailed is the search?

I'm not bringing anything dangerous or illegal. Just curious. Thanks!

it's no big deal and it doesnt take too long. the searches are done by fellow burners and not law enforcement. they are looking for animals and stowaways and making sure you're not rolling through with no provisions talking 'bout "let's party!"

Rad!

I'll be sure to pick up a duffel bag that can hold my cousin.

I may be searching you..........
and, looking for moop stuff, as well........

the duffel will work fine. We usually take a pitchfork and prod them, rather than opening the bags......tell him to "think small".......

moop, as i understand from the website, is litter, debris, etc.

does that mean if i have anything in the car that will later become trash, it will be confiscated? what exactly is the purview of the gate search as far as moop?

there are some proscribed items, like feathers, confetti, glitter bags......just stuff like that. Although, I don't know how tight straw bales are.......
On the main site, there are some do's and don'ts and such.
I'll be new to gate, I usually do perimeter......so, will be extra vigilant, so the masters won't beat me.......
I may trade my pitchfork for a hat pin.

so, basically you're looking for stuff that can't really be cleaned up easily, right?

straw bales? isn't straw biodegradable? would you have a good laugh if I brought a large bale of drinking straws and then reminded you of this thread?

yes, that would be a riot.......a super large bale of drinking straws would be perfect.......

I'd suggest you go, if you've not already, and read the first timers and survival guides, as well as anything else on the main site.
there are specific items not allowed and or discouraged......I can't remember them all, maybe someone else does.

But, yeah, stuff that will be a mess......doesn't matter if it's biodegradable, straw is still moop, so are feathers. One huge culprit is rough cut edges on astro turf......
It is "leave no trace", which, doesn't mean "it's ok to leave something if an animal will eat it or it'll melt in the sun or rain this winter".

I'm sure someone more learned than I will chime in on the exact items......
I'll have the list before I go on shift.......

Ygmir, are you arriving early this year? It would be great if you were one of the first people I met when getting there!

that is my plan, and hope.......to work early gate, up through first or second day, then, switch to perimeter.......

I was there early last year, but, was helping with a camp or two.

I'll look forward to seeing you, too, JK..............

as said above, gate crew isnt thier to cause trouble or fuck up your shit. theyre just making sure that your smart enough to have read and understood the basic rules and packing requirements for the event.

just make sure they cant see any drugs, or youll find them confinscated for "archival catalouging stuff and whatnot".

oh yeah, they will also likely want something back in return for thier generous assistance in maintaining the law. cookies are a good start, beer is better, and a bit of tongue simply cant be beat.

The gate search complexity completely varies from year to year. Factors involved are newbieness of the gate person, the weather, their mood, your mood, etc etc. :D It's really no big deal as long as you aren't bringing something obviously MOOP-ish or have your drugs laying around. Common sense, rules. :)

Last year we had our gate inspector try to confiscate a two wheeled motorized scooter from one of our camp-mates. We calmly explained that it was within the rules and requested him to double check with his superiors. He did, found out he was wrong and let it pass...no biggie.

Just know what you are (and aren't) allowed to bring and be friendly and polite! Offer them beer...they like it! Or at least a cold water or soda.

Yes, but there's not a whole lot of "bio" to help with that. The things that live on teh playa are called extremophiles (sp) and they sleep during the summer. In the winter, when it's a lake, they hatch. Basically, they are that childhood wonder known as "Sea Monkeys." Oh, there's probably more than that, but you really have to be aware that this is not life as you know it.* I sometimes wonder if they munch on our skin flakes.

We had iced down PBR's, snacks, air conditioning and a dust free space in the bus for our gate goon to hang out in for a little while.

He was quite appreciative and really took his time looking around our stocks in the back before saying we were remarkably organized and good to go. It seemed to take him about as long to finish the first beer we gave him and be offered a second one.

I always look for good used ice chest (mid-size) and then fill them with cool drinks and a few snacks for the fine gate folks and Greeters. They can then take the ice chest back to camp and reuse it. As the week gets longer, the gate/greeters love the gifts..... 8) 8) 8)
