Large pole...?
Dirty bastards...
How far down was the pole sunk that the man stood utop in 09?
Also, what have people been successful with as far as a telephone pole like structure? Something only about 15-20 feet tall but relatively sturdy?

Define "structure". Tent? Shade? Ferris wheel? Billboard?
How do you plan on digging holes? How many?

These would be supporting lights. Not a lot of weight, around 30-40 pounds tops.
I don't really want to dig into the playa, I just assumed looking at it that that's how the man was attached.
I had a 40 foot antennae mast last year, shorter sections of that may work but I wanted to see what others have used

a search for 'guy wire' brings up some pretty specific results
examples:
outdoor store
weather station supplies
antenna dealer

i almost blinded myself just now , was sipping a drink with a straw, held it too close to my face, tried to look down and almost shoved the straw into my eye... missed by a fraction of a fraction of an inch
its a good thing nothing went wrong with the guy wire setup that was used at burning man last year...

Antenna sections would be easier to rig IMO, eg with screw-in ground anchors and 5/16" wire rope.
