Burning Man or Bust 2010!!
Hi all!
I've wanted to go to Burning man for the last 4 years, but after talking to friends after they came back last year I decided I need to get my ass in gear and just do it. I've started collecting odds and ends (and essentials of course), bought my ticket on Wednesday and am trying to get with some friends to share in their theme camp. I've almost committed the survival guide to memory and can't wait till August!

Buying your ticket is the big commitment that mentally tells you that you're actually going. Make lists of supplies that you'll need for the week. Browse local stores with a notepad in hand and figure what you will be needing daily. When you hit Nevada, you can start checking off the list as you buy your supplies. They have all the usual big box stores, so it will be easy to work the list.
The road that leads to Gerlach, Route 447, is a beautiful, scenic ride and a nice prelude to an amazing week.
Good luck with your planning and WELCOME!

Hi Shambala, and thank you for the warm welcome. I live in western Colorado and was probably going to get most if not all of my supplies before I head out for the playa. I need to be fully prepared as much as possible on the basic survival stuff. So that way I can float more and steer less when I get there and after I set up camp.
I agree though, I am totally in the mindset of 'oh, this is going to work so well on the playa', and such thoughts. Rather than 'oh, that WOULD look good on the playa, *sigh*. So stoked!

The planning stage is always so much fun. Your mind can run wild with all the ideas of things you'll see and do, especially your first year. Steer Less, Float More makes lots of sense to me. Enjoy the fun of the lead up to August. Then get there, let all your expectations go, and dive in.

THAT. EXACTLY THAT. God I love planning for the Burn. Seriously, though...they should add "a battery-powered boombox" to the list of suggested items. It's great to have a little something to play your own music on when relaxing, especially when the thumpa-thumpa gets a little old.LeChatNoir wrote:The planning stage is always so much fun. Every year that I get back, listening to my blues and bluegrass seems so bizarre. It's like "Wait...this music has instruments...and melody...and LYRICS..." ;P

It has been said that the best day of vacation is the day before you actually leave. I sort of agree with that with regards to Burning Man. The dreams and fantasies are almost always better than the real thing. Never in my BM dreams do I think about the damn duststorms, cracked feet and chapped lips, the lack of sleep, dehydration, stinking damn hippies everywhere, and the hassles with the BMOrg DMV.
On the other hand, topless women. Yes.

There are topless women at Burning Man? Year #6 coming up and never noticed.Dr. Pyro wrote:It has been said that the best day of vacation is the day before you actually leave. Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

You’re right. I choose to remember the moments in between the stuff that is less fun… sort of cherry pick my memories. Even a few playa moments are enough to get you through the rest of the year and the thing is that during the week there’s more than just a couple. More like dozens in a single day. And to boot… when I’m there, even the bad stuff I sort of relish. It makes sense that your condition can swing from one extreme to the other in a flash. I mean… the week is like life boiled down to it’s essence. An intense crash course in the whole of the Human experience.Never in my BM dreams do I think about the damn duststorms, cracked feet and chapped lips, the lack of sleep, dehydration...
The playa can make you keenly realize that you are alive.
