Virgin Burn

Post by th3dougler » Sun Jan 24, 2010 8:56 pm

Hello ePlaya, my name is Doug and I will be attending Burning Man this year. :D :D :D

My lifepartner and I have been talking about it for the whole year and we just recently bought the tickets. We're taking a train from Toronto to Nevada, and we were considering just taking one of the busses to the event.

I dont want to ask too many questions, because I would rather scour the forum then post a question that has been answered an infinite number of times. But I feel I should add some meat to my intro thread and give you guys something to respond to...

SO:

Is taking a bus from Nevada to BM socially acceptable?

I am also concerned about food and water, namely what kinds of nutritionally balanced astronaut food I should be stocking up on.

Do people dig holes in the ground, stretch tarps over it, pee on it and then collect what percolates below for drinking water? Or is that just a bit too much?

And finally: Are ski/snowboard goggles dust proof? They have foam covering the vents, but I dont have very much desert experience coming from Toronto.

Thanks :D looking forward to reading whats up and hopefully contributing.

Hey! Nice signature - I like the design. As for transportation, you shouldn't have a problem finding a ride. The Burn Clean Project gives people a ride on their BioBus for a nominal fee and is apparently one king hell of a time on the way out to the playa. There is also the rideshare board on the website where you can see if anyone has available space in their vehicle.

In terms of nutrition, everyone will have their own advice on that subject. I always bring out plain old Gatorade powder, but next year I think I'll also bring out a load of pickle jars, since apparently pickle juice is one of the most effective liquids for fighting dehydration. If that's a load of shit, well, at least I will have delicious pickles. When I'm out I also always keep packets of Emergen C and a handful of CliffBars in my CamelBak, since you never know how long you're going to be away. Any food that takes very long to prepare will most likely never be eaten (in my experience, at least), as there is often way too much to do to spend time cooking chicken. Mmm...chicken. Damn, I want chicken now. Like a chicken makhni or something.

Okay, distracted there for a moment. In terms of water, good survival skills, but you can just buy a shitload in Reno. Water is cheap. Time at Burning Man is priceless. If you're going to spend time at the Burn working, do it somewhere other than your camp. It's a lot more fun that way. ;)

Lastly, I don't use ski goggles, but as long as they hold firmly to your face and make a seal then you should be fine. I don't even use goggles anymore - after a while you just kind of accept the dust and then it stops bothering you as much (I don't know why).

Can't wait to see you out at the Burn!

I'm no stranger to forums, and I find picture signatures to be a bit too gaudy. The BioBus seems like the right choice for us, as it means we can bring a boxed bike and while I can only bring 11 gallons of water, I'm sure they know that is enough for one person. I'm going to track down the no-water shower body wash I was reading about somewhere around here to keep my water for drinking.

I have talked to a couple people who have been to BM before, and they say its not what it used to be. I dont want to get into trouble here, but I'm a big fan of conciousness expansion, I've heard the event has shifted focus onto alcohol consumption (although obviously either one takes second stage the the art and the community). I basically want to know if everyone is just going to be drunk and sloppy, or if there are some trippy characters, or if its a healthy balance of all different types of people. Hoping for the latter.

I really just dont like alcohol. Its a sloppy social lubricant and there are countless other things I'd rather poison my body with. But I dont want to come all up in hurr and start dissing alcohol, because I know that a lot of people like it... but I certainly dont want to have to defend my choice to abstain from it.

what exact info are you looking for Th3?
Seems your bouncing around trying to figure out the drug of choice here?

Its everything and nothing.

Do what you would normally do. or not do, but we tend to not bring attention to the illegal in the state of NV. here on this forum.

And bashing one mans choice of euphoria is definitely not needed.
Guess what there is a AA out there, as well as NA, and rumor has it some BA and TnA.

Figure out what it is you need, and pack with you according to your own needs and wants.

Also figure out that there is at least 2k-3000?+- bars, so yup...your going to run into at least one person that is drunk!

P.S.
why again is it that you wanna go to a hot dusty desert climate, where everyones drunk?

Good job at getting to the heart of an issue! It is true that the most visible substance on the playa is good ol' fashioned booze, but the community somehow seems to make it work. There is certainly a very good amount of alternate recreation, and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone at the event with prejudices against what you choose to use. What it boils down, though, to is that the people there are good people, and it shows whether they are tripping or drunk. Also, because of the cops at the event (and respect for other participants), people usually keep it pretty low-key if they're on something. In fact, everything is so goddamn weird that I suspect that there are a lot more psychonauts in a scene than what a first glance might suspect. Or rather, it is impossible to tell exactly WHO is the one out of his gourd: the painted butterfly man, or the guy wearing a white T-shirt and jeans. Where's Waldo?

As for people saying that it's not what it used to be, well...I've only been going for three years, so I can't say much about what it used to be. I CAN, however, point out that if any event remains the same after some 23 years of existence, then it probably isn't very fun. True, the size and notoriety have drawn some spectators who went to Coachella and Bonnaroo and think that Burning Man is just another festival to roll at and dance all night (funded, of course, by selling Oxy to people). I had some neighbors in 2008 that pulled up late Friday afternoon and fit the description perfectly. It was horrible. Their blatant disregard for everything that Burning Man stands for almost ruined my weekend. That evening, though, my friend and I were riding to Esplanade from our camp and I mentioned to him that the situation was still really bothering me. Immediately, a voice called back and I stopped. A motherly-looking woman had heard me and stopped what she was doing, even though she had no idea what I was talking about. I got off of the bike and explained to her the situation. She listened completely and then told me that I had to let those people go and focus on the real community that was still there, even with a layer of yahoos obscuring the clarity. She then asked if I wanted a hug. I did. It was the best hug I have ever gotten.

A little bit of a tangent there, but I hope it resolved your concerns somewhat. Don't listen to the grumpy old farts. ;)

Just some snark. Not everyone drinks, I rarely do. And as far as what you want to do, best to keep your own counsel. LEO reads this, too, and I don't feel anon anywhere in cyber space. Drugs are illegal in NV and on the playa, just like at home. Getting caught with them can ruin your burn. And enrich the agency that got you; LEO is everywhere. I don't know what the elevation is where you live is, but the playa is about 4000 feet, looks like the moon and probably quite different from home. Remember to stay hydrated, a Camelback or a small pack with a water bladder, and remember to drink it. Lest they be pumping it into you at the aid station.

The best way to stay hydrated is to drink lots and lots of dusty millers, the water to alcohol content is staggering.

REI sells what are essentially giant baby wipes that are great for getting the dust off. Two or three and your whole body is clean.

I got some large wipes, a little bit bigger and a little nappy, from a hospital supply I found online. These worked. Also used a spray bottle with Dr. Bronners and one with plain water, then a washcloth. This was a very refreshing "shower". I also used a couple of no rinse shampoo products. I felt better after I used them, but don't know how much dust I actually got out. We used precious water and grey water storage for a couple of real solar showers. Even with all the dust I didn't feel as dirty as I thought I might. Kind 'a like how a bird takes a dust bath...

Th3dougler, I can't help but put in my 2 cents here since my first burn was 2009. It sounds like you're the analytical type (me too). I will tell you that trying to "figure out" Burning Man before attending won't work. When we first got there the woman at the front gate said, "It's not what you think it is!" How right she was!
The reality is, it doesn't matter if your drink, don't drink, use other intoxicants or don't use other intoxicants. NOBODY CARES! That's what makes BM so incredible! You can go anyplace, do anything (that doesn't hurt anyone) and NOBODY CARES! You can spend the entire week alone looking at amazing art from your bicycle, or you can spend the week talking to everyone and partying 24-7. You will be accepted and there are no strings attached.
Just go and have a great time, be kind and share stuff. Like I said, trying to quantify and package "what it will be like" isn't possible. My last advice is to bring:

1) Strange things to wear that you'd never wear at home. -- this is a must.
2) More water than you think you will need.
3) Less food than you think you will need.
4) Sunscreen.
5) An old bicycle in good working condition that you don't care about.
6) A bike lock.
7) A really good face mask - a bandana won't cut it (that's what I used last year and I've still got playa dust in my lungs...seriously)
8) And , last but certainly not least, an open-healthy mind.

Go online and volunteer for something on this site. You will feel better about being there if you participate. ENJOY!

First and foremost, I am not condoning or referring to illegal drugs. That would be irresponsible of me.

I'm definetly feeling the hate from the burning man community. I didnt mean to bash alcohol as the drug of choice. I would also get defensive if someone started speaking ill of... whatever it is I do with my time and money. So I'd like to formally apologize to the whole alcohol consuming community of the world.

With that out of the way, I've got this fantastic BMX frame that I'm going to rebuild for burning man. I'll be decorating it appropriately for the event.

I also found a gas mask that looks like
Image
which I think could jive well with the theme if I do it up right.

Even though I've been blackballed by every alcohol consumer at BM, I'm still unreasonably excited.

Don’t let a few quick remarks get you bummed. I didn’t think you were getting down on drinking at all, but rather just asking a question for your own research. Yes, there are a lot of bars and people drinking at Burning Man, and it’s true that some of them really drink more than they should. It’s a handful, though, and many people do not drink at all.. I bet you have a hard time picking the drinkers from the non-drinkers in any given Burning Man moment. It’s a surprisingly respectful place.

Now… return immediately to your mode of excitement.

dont sweat the remarks made on the forums. every forum has it's veteran's that like to take the alpha position and keep the new guys in check.

also, some people like to defend what the event means to them. it's a personal experience for everyone and means something different to each. if the polarity of your magnet doesn't match up with thier's, it may take some force to make a connection.

but yeah, i've only been once. and i was sober and clairvoyant atleast 90% of the time. well, maybe not clairvoyant as much as inebriated with wonder and awe.

but i do still have fond memories of sipping on a bottle of 10 year Tawny after a long day on a bike.

No worries about anything, that's what's so great about BM. The wonderful thing is, when you're there you can decide for yourself. Now, of course, the only way this is possible is because we all come from the "default" world where we are based. Being at BM means no rules (for the most part) because it's only for a short period of time. I agree with the post before me, there are different personalities on these threads. Take the ones you connect with. Looking forward to seeing you on the playa 2010!

This has been an incredibly helpful thread for this virgin :) i've been apprehensive about everything because I don't party a lot (ha, we'll see if that stays the case!), I'm more of a social butterfly

So yes, thank you for all the various aspects and acknowledging a WIDE variety of folks exist- and one of my biggest anxieties is not having someone to camp with or carpool with or being next to "those people" but the folks I have already been in touch with have been super supportive or reassuring-- and I think that speaks highly of the community.

I look forward to getting to know all of you on the forums and running into a few of you at the burn :)

No, you're feeling the snark from the ePlaya community. Weren't you aware of the purpose of this forum? This place exists so that people can burn off all of their excess snark before the event. DURING the event everything is all peaches and gumdrops. ;P

Seriously, though...don't worry about it. People on ePlaya are extremely sarcastic. Hit back by making threads discussing yoga techniques and veganism!

What kind of frame? And what are you doing to it? Just very curious.

I have plans for my 24" cruiser BMX bike to bring out there. The one thing I am definitely doing is putting a big comfortable seat on it. The standard BMX seats are great for when I am out riding like I usually do, but not so much for cruising around all day.
