Post by jakkimaguire » Sun Jan 24, 2010 2:12 pm

Hi my name is jack and i am from London UK, and i am seriously thinking about going to Burning Man, but thing is i really dnt kno where to start other than buying a ticket online, so i was wondering if there was anybody else from the uk who is going or has been who can give me more information about the event and where to get started, or anybody else who has info

my friend said to me that he knows that there is no money allowed and that it is 2 hours away from the nearest city so i was thinking the money i bring i cant have with me and how the hell am i going to get there from the airport ha

resourcefullnes and ingenuity is the key.

you'll probly wanna fly into Reno, as its the largest nearby city.

a significant number of burners will be traveling through Reno as its a main hub for all the people comming from the Bay Area which makes up a significant number of the attendants.

all you have to do is convince one of the 20,000 people from that area to give you a ride for that 4 hours.

you could join a theme camp if you wanted to work. or talk to some people who have thier own camp who are laid back enough to let someone kick it with them.

i think your hardest task is finding a way to get enough water for yourself onto the playa. as water can be both heavy and bulky.

ahhh i c so fly to reno and hitch a lift ok well i think thats cool i can do that i hope.. so it would be best for me to fly in early on the 30th and take a chance

what is the camp thing about? are there all ready established camps that u can join and bum around with then if u just gett talking to the rite ppl?

also the money thing can u take money into Burning Man but you just cant use it?

i kno these questions seem random but i only found out about it a few days ago and it seems like madness to me but i cant wait for it i just got to get my mind around it i have never done any festivals b4 and this one is hardcore

HI Jak......(no greetings in airports?).

I might suggest, first off, you read the survival and first timers guides, and related items, on the Burning Man main site.
There is a ton of info there, and, mostly, real/accurate answers.
Asking the easy and obvious, here, will draw snark. Not that that's a bad thing, but, you gotta have a thick skin for it.

Also, there are many threads here on eplaya addressing many of your concerns, and, the ones you don't know you have, yet.......

you have already gotten some inaccurate info about the Burn, so, be careful........

good luck, though, and, "Welcome"..........

Hi Jack,

Start with the Regionals page for the UK. There is a good chance that there are people near you who already make the journey from across the pond. Talking to, or meeting up with them could help make your trip much easier and more fun. Then make sure you read the First Timer’s Guideseveral times.

Then try to hang out around the forum and get to know some folks here. Lots of wisdom hidden within the snark.

The event encourages a gift economy. Nothing is for sale, as in no food vendors and such, so you will not need your money once you're there. Keep it safe in your vehicle and forget it for the week. Everything you need you must bring and pack out. Leave No Trace. Prepare as if you were camping in the desert alone. The First Timer’s guide will clarify a lot for you.

You can bring money, there's just no where to spend it inside the venue...with the exception of ice sales and espresso/coffee/electrolite drinks at the Center Camp Cafe.

there's a huge UK population that has attended Burning Man over the year...contact your local Regional group.

There's someone else in the forum, who posted within the last week who is from London and apparently there's a regular meeting there. In a pub. That's all I remember.

Better than a non-dusty route around. :D

I would add more info, except that most all of the advice worth giving has already been given. Come back after you have read the Survival and First-Timer's Guides - then you will have a LOT more insight as to what it is you are getting yourself into.
