ello...my names Bodhi (bow like a bowtie lol, and dee).

I live in Colorado, and this will be my first burn.
Many people I work with and know have been going to Burning Man for years. The way they talk about it and explain it got me interested. I cant even begin to imagine how it really is. I decided to stop guessing and stop making excuses to why I couldnt go or afford it, I want to experience the love and life of BM. So I bought my ticket with one of my best friends Suki (her first burn as well) , and we are working everything else out. I wanted to introduce myself and I cant wait to see you all and experience the playa this year. Any advice of any kind is great, wether its about spelling, life, etc lol

Random nonsence about me:
I talk a lot, I dont like chocolate, i dont eat ice cream, i have 10 freckles on my right arm, I have a passion and love for dancing (all types), I love love love muisc, I get off topic easily but it usually has a point (sometimes), i enjoy learning knew things (so share something with me).

i cannot wait to taste those worms lol, its the only thing on my mind and it will be for the next 7 months.

Any advice on what foods are the most filling and last the longest .
I know there are probable a good list that people could send, but i wanted to get others opinions on what they feel is a necessary food item that is great to have everyday as a snack!


Also I would to help out and get to meet as many people as I can while out there. I got the advice of volunteering at the Burning Man post office for a day...would this be a good thing for a new burner??

So for food it tends to be a good idea to bring thinks that don't spoil easily. I personally like fruit cups, beef jerky, fruit leather, energy bars. Be careful with energy bars though because some of them have the side effect of melting and getting gooey and gross.
For your first year volunteering at the post office could be fun but at the same time you should really just experience your first burn. There will be so many things spinning your head so many different ways and I don't recommend signing up for something in advance your first year because playa time can kick your ass. I swear I lost days back in 06.

I second that. Just come out and soak it up for the first time. I guarantee that there will be opportunities to volunteer during the week that don’t require signing up before hand. Then after you’ve experienced your first Burn, your head will be full of ideas for things to do.

And you may decide that you’d like to work with the Post Office later in the week anyway. Myself and my campmates wound up delivering some mail for the Post Office the first year by posting a letter ourselves and finding out that there was some mail that needed to be delivered in our side of the city. It was a lot of fun and a good way to meet people.

Just come out to the desert and go with the flow.

That completely makes sense. I obviously want to experience as much as I can without my head bursting lol. I can go with the flow...im good at that!! Ive only heard good this about burning man, so Im keeping my mind open as to what I shall expect. I know I cant even try to think of what it will be like ...because Ive been told its nothing like what I think it will be.

I have also been asked if I wanted to join a camp from my region. Is a camp useful or do i just go all out and rough it out haha. I want the best experience I can have.

Alsooooo whats the best kinda of drink to bring out there as in alch. Obvisouly not glass...but ive heard from friends certain drinks just arent good for the playa? What do you fine drinkn pepls suggest? (ill bring the beer hat hahaha , nah ill have to be more creative than that!)

I must disagree with you there! Don't listen to everything they say - melty energy bars are DELICIOUS. Also, in 2008 we made a TON of really good spaghetti sauce before the event and put it in a giant Ziploc bag. That way, we only had to make noodles to get a fucking AMAZING playa meal. In the same vein, I think this year I'm going to try bringing those Indian Fare meals that you can get at Trader Joe's for pretty cheap. Minimum prep work and they're really good.

check out apogaea.com for the colorado regional in june it fucking rocks. you can meet a ton of burners and maybe find some people you would like to camp with. its also a great place to have discussions about the burn face to face.

As far as playa food um, BACON (obvious burner choice) it takes on a whole new existence out there for some reason....like its not even food anymore...
and my vote (may be a personal choice but will always remain on the top of my "Gotta Have" list: Avocados.......you buy one of those plastic mesh bags with about a dozen of UNRIPE avocados..... little EVO, salt, pepper....OH MY GOD....delicious....and the only thing that you need is a spoon....and then put that pit & skin back up in the mesh bag and hang it in the sun.....mmmmmm....science

Cocktail Advice? A lesson our camp learned the hard way-grapefruit& gin? yum? right? refreshing? healthy? good choice on the playa?
nope. something about the citrus and the alkali gives you painful sores in your mouth. yuck.

haha nope no one ever gets why i dont like ice cream...they just call me weird. its okay though...maybe i am lol.

But hummm avocados are really good and very easy to manage. Same with speg and sauce. Bacon eh?? I try to like bacon but i dnt think ive ever given it a chance...i may have to this year haha.

I dont want to over think it I know I will not get a close idea what so ever lol. I may try to plan an a and b idea...but ill probable forget it or just not even remember it once im there.

I think protein is a good thing to think of, keeps you full longer and is lean energy for going all day long on the playa. Like cashews, almonds, beans or rices with tofus or anything yummy that you prefer...But then again, this just comes from my own experiences in the desert.

The more water the better. I think canned fruits are good, don't spoil, don't need refrigeration, and can be chilled quickly for a nice cool treat with a bowl of ice.. and if you get the kind of your choice, packed in WATER, not SYRUP, it's more refreshing...

I'm camping my first year in 2010 as well. I'm coming all by my lonesome from arizona, so I will be putting everything in a cooler, but if I don't pack anything that DOESN"T need ice, the better.... When it's hot out, you sometimes do tend to eat smaller meals throughout the day and just snack... but then again, if you do join a camp, there are usually community kitchens that you can help cook in for a hot meal or help contribute and share your foods/resources.

Last year was my first year and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

One thing you can learn (that I learned): Leaving Denver on Sunday morning, like 10ish, taking I25 north to I80 and then west, will get you to Black Rock City just a bit after sunrise. So it won't be too hot but you wont be setting up in the dark.

Way overwhelmed, and a little timid. Driving to a desert I'd never seen (at first I though Great Sand Dunes, no problem- then I was told its nothing like that, started to worry) in an old Suburban thats getting OLD. Heard that no matter how hard I tried I wouldn't be prepared enough. So I read everything on this site... turns out if you read all this, and take it in, there is a very good chance you will be prepared for what you need to survive and have a good time.
It is totally necessary to go every year tell I die. I've been dreaming and planning for 2010 since the drive home from 2009.

I must ask, what way did google tell you to go? If it told you to take I70 through Utah and southern Nevada, that is an option, though I'm sure you've driven a vehicle way over loaded up and down the grades through the Mountains. I feel i70 takes too long going up and down hill, is too hard on a vehicle that is loaded to max capacity (even a 1990 3/4 ton suburban with a rebuilt engine). i80 is flatter and much easier to drive. (and you can draft off the truckers hauling ass at 80mph)

Draft off the truckers? They hate that. Be sure to pick an independent if you do, most of the big companies governor their trucks around 62 mph.

But I-80 is a better option. That's why the truckers use it so heavily.
