giant smoke ring cannon?

Post by dragonfly Jafe » Fri Apr 30, 2004 9:12 am

Anyone ever build a giant smoke ring cannon (toroid/vortex generator)? I want to scale up one of those smoke ring pistols into a device that will shoot a giant smoke ring in excess of 50 feet (vehicle mounted). Anyone have experience here? I am familiar with the basic theory, but hoping for some quick hints. Did you have to use a specially shaped impulse to achieve peak effect? What was the total volume of displacement required? Is 50-60 feet realistic (assuming a dead calm)? What is the best medium to use for "smoke"? Any safety concerns? regards, Jafe

To create the smoke you have several choices. The first two that come to mind are a pyrotechnic smoke through various chemicals or a burning oil effect. I use corvis oil with various colored dyes in my fire art device. Corvis oil is what the jet aerobatic pilots use. It is non toxic and can be dyed easily for colored smoke. The pyrotechnic smoke is more costly to produce and many of the colors have a rather obnoxious odor leading me to believe they may be less than fun to breathe. It does take a heat source of some good amount to make the corvis oil smoke. Corvis oil is also what is used in crop dusting aircraft as fertilizers and insecticides bond well to it and it bonds well to plants.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.

All I know on this is they we experimenting with them as a way to twist the wings off aircraft during WW2 .. ( freedom of information act ?) .. so you might avoid setting up near BRG Airport ... but good luck with it anyway ...
