I'm only 17....
I'm planning on road tripping to Burning Man with about 7 friends from Rochester, NY. Anything I should know?
My plan is to go to burning man before I turn 25.

My son is 17 and this is his third burn. You will have an eye-opening, life-changing experience IF you read the first-timer's guide three times and then REMEMBER everything. Water, rest, be prepared always.
Underage drinking is illegal and there are undercovers. Don't just focus on the party. Never get so far gone that you can't look after yourself.
Participate in some of the lectures, classes, events because you will never find them anywhere else.
Let yourself be free and forget about all the crap you learned in highschool regarding your societal box and what you should or should not be.
If you're a guy, wear a skirt.
Look us up on the Playa! My boy would be happy to hang with someone his age. 5:45 and G-ish.

I don't remember being ID'd at the gate. Obviously you can't drink. Oh well. Drugs are bad and there are hella cops. But I can definitely say that I wish I was burning at 17. There's a lot of good to learn out on the playa. If you make it in as a youngster, do your age-group some good and don't act like most people would expect a 17 year old to act. Age has no bearing on how mature you are, so don't let your number of years hold you back from having an amazing and responsible experience

SKYLER-WELCOME to Eplaya... And I DO hope you guys can make it!!!!
I'm only 21 myself, so it's good to see the younger generation having appreciation like myself for this awesome week-long event...
Oh, Blurt-sorry to ask...
1. I do understand the 5:45 part, the "clock" diagram from the west side of the circle to the east... just as a clock would look, from an aerial view of the esplanade (correct???)
So... what is the "G-ish" part? Sorry guys this year is my first year...

When you guys mention "camp locations" (i.e. 5:45 and G-ish)Blurt wrote:My son is 17 and this is his third burn. You will have an eye-opening, life-changing experience IF you read the first-timer's guide three times and then REMEMBER everything. Water, rest, be prepared always.

The latitudinal streets are named alphabetically and having some relation to the years theme. They run parallel starting at esplanade then a... then b... etc. in the past I believe its gone out to K, but that may be a variable that changes year to year based on the cities expected size.

I agree about the maturity thing, however, we're talking a legal technicality here. What IF this is the year BLM cracks down on ID at the Gate? What is the back up plan if you can't get in?CornStar wrote:I don't remember being ID'd at the gate. Obviously you can't drink. Oh well. Drugs are bad and there are hella cops. Don't think you can sneak in, that will get the entire vehicle banned from the event. That's the Gate's main purpose, behind checking for tickets, nailing stowaways. They're damn good at it for the most part.
I say you have a few months to find a legal guardian.

For the record ... I'm certainly not trying to advocate any illegal activity or Burning Man rule breaking. The rules are there for a reason, and there are quite few of them. Just be smart, get involved online, meet some regionals. There are absolutely people in the community who would be happy to represent you as a guardian if they think you are mature and worthy enough of being a minor at BM. But to be honest, you probably want to shadow someone that is over 21, so you don't get hurt or lost or overwhelmed or underfed. Having a responsible adult thats been to BM before is an asset not a burden. Thats what eplaya is all about, meeting friends and neighbors so your at home the second you set foot on the playa

As a matter of fact, the majority of Gate is extremely well read, backs of cereal boxes AND porn mags!Bling wrote:Gate folks can read? With the whole blowing-Playa-dust-into-folks'-cars-as-a-prank thing, I wasn't sure.
