Art Car Concept Needs Collaboration

Post by dignified_speck » Sun Jan 31, 2010 11:41 am

So I'm in Santa Rosa, mostly broke, in school, and largely uncertain of whether or not I'm going to make it out this year... But this idea is on my tail and YOU may be the person who's gonna make it real...javascript:emoticon('')
Idea

It will be a skyscraper repair truck. It will look like a pest control vehicle meets a cityscape knockoff with a jungle in the rear (or lower level). On the top will be a crooked, laughing, spidery suited lackey holding a fishing rod with a banana out front. There will be a sound system playing. It will be a daytime car.

We'll serve bananas grown on US soil. Sgt. R. Hood will be a marine who attacks people from this vehicle, his only purpose, other than terror, is to be crass and distribute bananas.

The effect should be a skyscraper on wheels with action in the rear. ..excuse me.

And ALL I WANT TO KNOW javascript:emoticon('')
Shocked: is can there be enough resources between us to build it?

We'd need:
A Car (preferably a flatbed)
Lighting
(I've got speakers)
And people who could design the statue and main building.

Half-baked dream launched. Any buyers?

interesting approach. Who wants to make me a mutant vehicle?
good luck with that. If it works I might try it.

Come on, be nice.

Surely someone has an extra flatbed car sitting around in thier backyard that they don't need any more ?

Reality check... I'm not gonna be rude...
It takes time, some money, and a lot of mechanical skill to build a mutant vehicle. If you don't know if you're even gonna make it, it doesn't sound like you're in a position to tackle a project like that.
I have more money into TRANSPORTING my mutant vehicle to the desert and back than I have into the mutant itself. You'll need a truck and a big trailer and a lot of fuel.
Burning Man isn't about coming up with crazy ideas and expecting someone else to do them for you. If it isn't YOUR project that YOU are building, you pretty much don't get to be the designer. But if you're really into it, maybe you could help someone who is building something, if you have any usable fabrication skills.

I'm with the Captain on this one. I'm struck by the number of people who have these great "ideas" and just need - A. Materials B. Someone to realize this idea and C. The means to get it to the playa. It just don't work like that. Having built 2 MV's, (small ones!) there is a tremendous amount of time and resources to make them a reality. I like your idea a lot, I really do. But the proof's in the pudding. You show up with your dream on the playa I'll be the first to shake your hand and say "well done!" But it takes more than an idea and some speakers to get something like this off the ground. Plus there is the satisfaction of doing it yourself. So take some time and see if your "idea" can become your reality. And good luck. I really mean that too.

I'm with both Captain and Helix... It is a huge pain in the ass to build and transport to the Playa. We're not even talking about the costs. For anyone who has ever built and taken an mv to the Playa, how many times did you say, "why am I doing this?" Once you're rolling across the Playa you will finally know the why. It's great! But it is definitely harder than you think! If you're going to try, go the extra mile. Thoroughly thought out and extraordinary MVs are a great gift to the citizens of Black Rock.

I'm gonna throw in one more point I sorta touched on: before you can even think about building a mutant vehicle for Burning Man, you need to have the logistics covered on how you are going to transport it. That pretty much means you gotta have a truck and trailer.
And - this isn't true in EVERY case, but in general, if it's still practical to drive on the highway to and from the event, it probably isn't "mutant" enough.

Normally everyone wouldn't be immediately saying so many things that sound discouraging... we like M/Vs and the people who build them. And I like your idea too. It's just that you came across in your post like someone who hasn't fully realized what it takes to make and transport a Burning Man vehicle.

Have you submitted your idea to the DMV for pre-registration. I'm in your neck of the woods, so if this gets serious id love to help. Got a friend with a duece and a half, for 3 1/2 grand. Big job though.

I'm not current on DMV regulations, but if nothing else I could help you in making it passable. Fuck all the snarking, people gotta start somewhere.

Well I dunno, there is just me and I am unemployed too but I have my ticket to burn already. I just posted my trailer here and also with some local yahoo groups (again) and will have to wait and see if we get any takers. I haven't had ANY luck on my side and my trailer has been broke since last spring. Good luck to both of us.

You might try looking into the theme camps listed under theme camps on the Burning Man website and see which ones are local to you. They list an emailable contact. Ask the group leader if you can join their group and throw your idea at him. Maybe his campmates are looking for ideas for this year and will want to help build it. I did read that art grants are only for art projects and not art cars, plus the deadline is already past as of today. So break a leg.

Moderaator note:

Your trailer post is still in it's own thread, but I deleted the one here. Cross-posting is highly discouraged, this board is small enough we don't need duplicate posts. I thought it would do better by itself rather than buried in this discussion.

Thanks,
Anti M
