first timer from NY
Hi everyone. I'm Jess and I'm a virgin burner from New York.
I got my ticket yesterday so now I'm really excited. I've been reading up on first timer/survival guides and watching youtube experience videos, but nothing compares to first-hand accounts from veterans of the playa.
I'm a lover of almost all music. I am very artsy. My current job/hobbby/love is making synthetic dreadlock falls/wigs. I've been doing it for a nice amount of time and I'm hoping to make some fresh, new falls for every day at the playa. I love meeting new people.
I'd love to help participate in projects that burners are doing in my area. I know that Disorient has a theme camp and have been going for a while. They throw raves around my area. They're actually throwing a benefit for Burning Man so I hope to go to that because that's all I know of so far.
But I would love to meet new people before I get to the playa because I'm sure I will meet sooo many more once I get there. Don't worry, I'm extremely friendly.

Re: first timer from NY
My first night ever at the Burn I ended up at Disorient dancing in roller blades. Those guys rocked!convenientlust wrote:I know that Disorient has a theme camp and have been going for a while. And I guess I'll be the first to say it - read the Survival and First Timer's Guides. Over and over. They are the most important source of information for your first year (other than back issues of Piss Clear...

I wil be checking out some of the Disorient events as well. I used to go to many of the Complacent parties at Dumbo (back when it was Lunitarium). Oh, and I have been going to raves since '93. I don't frequent them anymore, really. Just when the music is calling and I need to dance
I would like to participate in some events in my area as well. I can offer tarot readings for fundraising
Do you sell falls. I have short hair, but was thinking they would be fun to wear - bright, oh so bright.
I am sure we will cross paths on the board.

Thanks LaReyna! It's pretty fun. I'm actually making dreads with the Man on them.
But anyway, the rave posted above this is in Brooklyn. And Bioluminescence is a fundraiser for BM and is coming up pretty soon in the city. DisOrient hosts it. I hear they throw some sick parties and have had some fun theme camps at BM.

Yes, this will be my first burn. Me and my BF got our tickets in the mail last week. We haven't decided what exactly we're doing as far as theme camps. We might be doing our own little thing but I wouldn't mind camping with people from my general area. I'm more concerned about making sure all of the survival and safety issues are sorted out first.
Bu I am always thrilled to meet people in my area that are going or atleast planning to go. Did you get your ticket yet? Have you figured out how you're getting there? Have you signed up for the Regional emails yet (you get lots of information about events/projects going on in your area)?

either way
a camp is fun but also being in with a bunch of singles can be fun too. Don't worry about going either way and you will meet people.
I have a cousin from NYC who may come this year. She is a teacher and isn't totally sure she can make it but she was thinking about coming with a group of her friends from NYC.
take care and hope to see you there.

A word of caution about the NY lists ... well, I guess any list; anywhere people communicate other than one-on-one individually.dragonpilot wrote:Dood...check it out: [email protected]
Years ago ... 2005 or so, I think ... I was on the NY list and was excited to find my peers -- other people who liked to try and to create. I opened up my ideas and was greeted with snarky comments trampling them out. I stayed on as long as I dared, trying to defend unsuccessfully against the onslaught of petty destroyers. Their argument was that if your idea wasn't fully-formed and bulletproof, it was shit. So rather than pointing out shortcomings and offering solutions, they'd point out shortcomings and gleefully declare you and your project a failure.
Even though that was years ago, I think it's key to remember that there are people who will help you make your dream project happen. People on the NY list, Tribe, or ePlaya are just ones (myself included) who have the time and inclination to yap online. Although we mostly call ourselves Burners, that really has little to do with whether we are helpful, like to create, or are supportive. You don't need to toughen your skin against naysayers, just go another way. Keep this close at heart: if you worry about some snarky prick online, it may be time to close the door to them and go get your life done ... totally not worth the time, believe me.
Of course, if you do already have a tough skin against jerks, then you're probably fine.
May your deeds return to you tenfold,
