Temporary Autonomous Zone
I read the book years ago...it was basically an anarchist manifesto..of sort. Written by Hakim Bey.
Burning Man as an organized festival, is a lot like Disneyland. But deep down, I think we have collectively, created an autonomous zone. Even with all the law enforcement, what we are allowed to get away with in Nevada...kinda conservative..is amazing!
With idiot groups like the tea baggers popping up, I see more and more the relevance of our community.

wilson was basically an anarchist. even though the concept isnt entierely new - its a variation of certain naturally emergent social movements in the absence of a formalized authoritarian structure- but it was never as well voiced and explained until his work.
much of the early bay-area movements that gave rise to things like burningman also shared common platforms of beliefs, so its natural to make the association. underground party collectives and cacaphony, and survival research labs are a few others, but taz adoption was more spread than being a bay-area centered phenomenon.

Not sure what Hakim Bey thinks about Burning Man specifically, but he has said that raves/freeparties share certain elements with his definition of TAZs. But he seems to draw a line at the use of electronic music as he considers it a form of mediation. Of course he also seems to periodically bring up his interest in pedophilia and incest, which has ultimately soured me to the rest of what he says.

Ted Kaczinsky soured me, by killing innocent civilians, but I had to agree with a lot of what he wrote. Ben Franklin was the most interesing of our "founding" fathers, but acknowledged the practicality of worshipping satan (not that I care, but someone else might)...he also wrote "Fart Proudly" heheTimezone LaFontaine wrote:Not sure what Hakim Bey thinks about Burning Man specifically, but he has said that raves/freeparties share certain elements with his definition of TAZs. If I'm remembering it correctly, his concept of Immediatism is to remove all the mediating factors of connection between people. So, speaking face-to-face would be more immediate than speaking on a phone, or through a forum like this. In a similar sense, I think he regards electronic music as being less immediate than acoustic music, in that it is having to go through these mediating steps, relying on electricity, amplification, perhaps including samples of previously recorded music and so forth.theCryptofishist wrote:How does electronic music mediate? a heightened responsiveness of mediums would seem to indicate
the cover-band phenomenon, adjunct, philo/
\Sophy
if the nature of what's amplified is of flux...
or then, acoustic, being mere mechanistic amplification

don't know myself to be obvious... yet thanks for the validation/invitation
the mind seems like a fancy blue hole, if flesh were earth
sometimes a sparrow, sometimes the birdhawk, the awareness flits above
any novel advance in thought worth being reeks a bit of taz
concious and collective, the potency roils

...book tells the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a seagull who is
bored with the daily squabbles over food. Seized by a passion for flight,
he pushes himself, learning everything he can about flying, until finally his
unwillingness to conform results in his expulsion from his flock. An
outcast, he continues to learn, becoming increasingly pleased with his
abilities as he leads an idyllic life.
