Recon Missions and Playa Conditions

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:34 am

Back a day early from playa recon mission over super bowl weekend. Frog pond was lovely and so was Trego hot spring with delicious, stinky mud and not a human to throw it at. Lot's of "lake" on the playa. Almost got stuck due to rain on roads. All is well for Black Rock City to be as flat and perfect as 2004 if we can just get one more giant downpour, yes?

For the real hot spring experience, have a nice, relaxing dip in Double Hot.

We used Double Hot to kill the fleas on our cat.

It worked.

Last time I was at Double Hot, somebody sabotaged the pipes. Was it you, Zsu Zsu? Then there are saints like One Eye who leave a place like Frog Pond better than they found it. Nice new ladder there, too.

Here's a 360 I took about two clicks N/W of Froggy just past the last sage brush:

How are the huge three legged crickets at the pond?

So they're getting as much rain as California? I sure hope so.

Damn - those ruts will harden and be there in june.

every time on playa we have to do lots of leveling to attempt land speed runs. hitting a rut at 500+ would do significant damage to the car and driver.

Do you harrow or land plane the playa with a tractor dmdf007?

Simpler than that - BLM does not want earth moving equipment on playa to excavate large amounts of dirt and thats not what we need.

To flatten out the playa is real simple - just drag a 20' wide section of chain link fence thats about 100 feet long. That flattens it right out, cuts the high spots off, fills the low.

Yah that would work great. That system is what I used as a pasture harrow behind a four wheeler, albeit much smaller.

One scared the be-Jesus out of me at night. And I thought your burning of the frogbat effigy would keep me safe! Funny how a duck's flapping wings can sound just like a pack of hyenas chuffing for meat.

Can't wait for Rendezvous to get on the playa and soak in Frog Pond... Some body is gonna' take us around to show the hot springs and I'm gonna' GPS 'em so I can find 'em again. They can be hard to locate.

Sounds like fun. Finding them is not as hard as obtaining legal access as many are on private land. I heard they're not going to have live music this year at the rendezvous?

They are actually a species of freshwater mussels from the order Unionidae.

I just made that up.

yeah, I've seen them, both sub species, the "Grizzley Adams"
(filter feeders) and the "Yul Brynner" (lure their prey), variety.
both tasty, though.

Ah but does a hippie banging a drum constitute "music"? Even if there are a couple more beat boxing?
