"Trespassers Will: possible large scale interactive art

Hello ever'one,

I'm relatively new to e-playa, but I wanted to post a link to a Large Scale Art Project we hope to bring out to the playa this year. I've been working as a carpenter for Burningman for eight years and want to build something a little extra for 2010. While I wait to hear back from the Grant Proposal Committee, I thought maybe I could post a link to our project here and see what folk might think. Thanks for your time.

I like this project so far. The lathwork looks like it’d be fun to do and look at afterwards. I imagined myself sitting under the tree, leaning my back up against it and resting a spell in the dusty breeze.

umm, so. Should something not be built then if you cannot wheel a chair up inside it? Most times there are ways the disabled Person will have access anyways with help and planning even if the Chair won't. And that is burners helping burners. This IS getting old Crypto...just sayin...bless your heart...and I am SO going to Hell for making this comparison but there is a wonderful place where all things are ADA accessible...called Disneyland. And I doubt that's how you want the playa to end up, is it?

I am never gonna stop bitching about the tiny little hands needed to work on Japenese cars, and how inaccessable they are to full-sized caucasian male hands, and in the same respect, I don't expect them to build thier cars differently, but I can always hope.

This project looks pretty amazing. Is it going to be climbable? Please say yes, I would love to swing like a monkey and throw shit, ummm, errrr,..... bundles of happyness at people.

If I see any disabled people. I will promptly stop throwing "happiness" and lift them to my branch with my massive pectoral muscle strength.

Thank you all for the responses so far. Crypto, I'm afraid it is true that access to the upper deck isn't wheelchair accessible. We did attempt several designs to make it so early on, but the budget just isn't there to do it, both in terms of construction time and money. That doesn't mean you can't make up to the upper deck, only that getting up there will take a measure of creativity on your part, something I've experienced here you have a great deal of. And the interior of the tree at ground level is still very accessible, very shady, and very roomy.

You are the first to note the reference to Winnie the Pooh. Great Job! In the beginning designs, I was aiming towards something that looked like an amalgamation of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet's tree, a storybook playhouse come to life on the playa. Of course, the design ended up going through a lot of phases and filters and the end project looks less than similar to our initial aim, but if you look close at the conceptual drawings, we left in windows (we'll make them out of stained glass) going up the trunk of the tree. I love the name Trespassers Will, the way it sounds, and the possible ideas the title might provoke it each citizen. Does 'will' mean 'allow', indicate some kind of response (as in Trespassers will be shot), or does it refer to our Will? I don't know...I just like the way it sounds.

Thanks Goatt, you're a sweety. I do know that providing access can be expensive. I also believe that if you look into it on the start, there's more possibility for graceful incorporation. I do know that getting projects to the playa is a hideous round of fundraising, and sometimes more when you get back...
But knowing that you thought about it? Oh how sweet!

How are you doing the windows?

We're making the windows out of stained glass, though the designs they will exhibit have not been decided on yet, since we're still ironing out funding. One of the fellas on the crew is a professional stained glass artist, and he's itchin' to bring a little of his own art to the playa. There will be at least four windows on Trespassers Will, mounted at various heights around the trunk and in the thumb. There 'might' be additional, smaller windows on several of the limbs, too, about where we might suppose a knuckle to be. We won't know for sure, though, for another week or so. We'll be takin' the windows down, of course, the eve before we engulf Trespassers Will in open flames. The artist on our crew designing and fabricating the windows wants to keep them and bring them back to the default world with him.
