the miss playa del fuego report! (and pictures)

this weekend was the Miss Playa de Fuego (east coast regional burn) competition, which was the first pageant to be hosted by Miss Black Rock City! check out the post show report for a taste of what is to expect for the Miss Black Rock City competition on the playa this year:

first i would like to thank all the contestants for going for it – you all rocked! i couldn’t have done it without you, nor would i have wanted to!

next i would like to thank everyone the audience for being so responsive. it makes me quite happy to see a bunch of photos of smiling faces, all turned towards the stage!

i have the finalist’s names as: ben and deirdre, with maricar as the first runner up, and kate as the new Miss Playa del Fuego! if anyone has contact info for one or more of these people, please let me know, so i can give them props in the next press release. thank you!

overall the pageant was a huge success. the mudwear fashion was fabulous: nat in his wetsuit, maricar naked except for pink rubber boots, beckyparty with her clear raincoat over a flowered dress and parasol... it was fun to see everyone’s ‘walks’! the talent section was also out of this world – suzQ did a reading of an olivia newton john song, ben prepared his absynthe (bending over in his fabulous flaming corset!), there was break dancing, and maricar drew blood! the audience went wild! sorry to the pretty unicorn girl who claimed to not have a talent – i know you have one somewhere girl, we all do! i was trying to help you find it!

the questions were a huge hit as well: 1) if you were to win the title of Miss Playa del Fuego, how would you make PDF a better place for all? (courtesy of blush!) and 2) what is the biggest fire you’ve started and how did you do it? (courtesy of mayor ratti!) the variety of answers was astounding, and Kate really nailed the beauty contestant style delivery during her answer, securing her spot as the new miss Playa Del Fuego!

i would like to also thank dr odd for participating, AND being the only one who actually bribed ME – not just the judges (although i suspect i would have received said ‘bribes’ regardless of the pageant, as he is a swell guy, but its fun to think of them as ‘bribes’ none the less!)

when i stepped off stage i noticed that Paula and FuBar had made a bunch of sashes for people; so many self-proclaimed beauty queens running around! it warmed my stone-cold heart. ;) no matter who wins / looses the pageant, no one can take away our self-proclaimed titles. the PDF pony was lit that night by kate, yielding both a flame thrower and her Miss PDF sash. this made me very, very proud.

I AM LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP ORGANIZE THE MBRC PAGEANT! contact me at [email protected] if you are interested. the MBRC show is a bit of a different animal than MPDF, so keep the following in mind:


1) while there is minimal physical labor involved with the creation of the MBRC pageant and its other events, there is a lot of brane power that needs to be pooled before we hit the playa. we need to determine how to register the MASSES for the prelims which will take place in asylum, and we also need to determine how to coordinate the theme camps within asylum during this event. this is a HUGE and daunting organizational task! only 10 finalists make it to the pageant, at disorient and we want to have the best 10!
2) we also need to come up with ‘guidelines’ to help the judges of the main pageant (when to eliminate, how many to eliminate when, how to announce the finalists, etc)
3) we need a few ‘stage managers’ for the prelims, and one for the main event at disorient, so that my attention can be focused on the show and on the contestants, rather than the technical details. an outline of the events will be made in advance for the stage managers to follow.
4) we need to have more people to write up blurbs and disseminate information to interested people before we hit the playa, as well
5) those who volunteer get first dibs at the judge’s spots! YAY!
