Explain burning man...

Post by TrueWrdzzz » Fri Feb 26, 2010 12:13 pm

Hello everyone I was interested in hearing from attendees how they view burning man. I have never attended and am considering attending being some of my friends are going. I'd also be interested in learning some tips for daily hygiene as well as what kind of clothes should I bring if I were to go.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

I see Firemoose didn't get the memo.

Read the survival guide and the first timer's guide on the main site. Then read as many of the threads here as you can. This will answer many of your questions, and help you ask questions which are more specific to your situation.

Sure, it cools off at night, but not cold enough for my winter parka... (_not_ -40!)

Drink more water than you have ever drank before, bring layers so you can stay warm at night, set up a night-time. pee jug so you have less distance to walk in the cool. Judge nothing, try not to be dead-stupid.

Have Fun!!!

Stretch80 clearly wasn't at TTITD in 2000 when it never got out of the 80s and rained every day, or (I believe it was) 2005 when the temperture in a 36 hour span went from 28 degrees to 105. So don't even think that it can't get below 40. It has a lot of times and I have a frozen bum to prove it.

I meant minus 40F... ;) I wear a fleece and shell until it get to about -4F and then I upgrade to a parka. (so, yes I know it can get cool, but really, 28F is not that cold... Check the temperature of in Saskatchewan Canada in December)

Yes, but 28 can be damn cold if you're not prepared for it. Have layers, fleece, a shell... It's good to be ready for it, especially if you want to go out at night. It appears last year was mild, only 45, and I didn't need much extra layers. But I'll still bring it this year.

Classic question. And you're not the first. We've all asked it...

Like a non-parent asking a parent what it's like to be a parent. What that type of unconditional love feels like, or how the parent and child are connected in un-explainable, unseen and unmeasureable ways...

We can 'describe' what it's like to be at Burning Man. You can look at pictures & 'imagine yourself' doing that 'thing'. You can watch videos on YouTube or read stories about others adventures there.

But it's something you can't understand until you live through it. It changes you...

The only suggestion I have is to prepare (read below), WITHOUT any other expectations. I guarantee you that if you set any type of expectations, you will be disappointed or limit yourself, in an environment that truly allows you to NOT limit yourself. Like being a kid again...

Read the Survival Guide. Plan out 'how' you're going to survive. What food to take. Decide whether you want to join a group of people already going 'Theme Camp' or go solo. Tent or RV? What outfits/costumes will you have for the days (very warm) and nights (cold-very cold)? Lighting? Bikes? And if you're taking a significant other, read through eplaya on ways to preapre your relationship for the real playa...

The 1st year changed our lives! Have fun if you make it out this year!!

I had pretty high expectations my first Burn.... but....
the experience was far more exciting, transforming, life-enhancing, amazing and fun than I had dreamed.
Got back home and shared the pics and stories with a lot of people....
no one was very interested!

It's my escape from reality for a week. It's a place where I can go and relax all day long with no worries and a lot of awesome minded people. A place where I can be crazy fun and people don't look at me like a weirdo. It's just home.

Use a soda can to shave.. Slice it, put some water in it, shave, rinse, repeat.

Buy waterless soap for your hair and body. Medical supply places have this. Use the no rinse stuff to clean yourself from time to time during the day if you feel shitty. Also, you can use it as a sub shower for a day.

Good deodorant is a MUST. Especially if you play with lEttErs of the alphabet and sweat when dancing. Rub a little on your balls if you shave.. Trust me.

Cut your hair shorter just before you go. You will save lots of water and stay cooler.

Wash your feet!!!! Twice!! Dirty hippie.
