Bicycle Ride Report:
Left at 12:45. Destination Post Office. Rode mostly unfamiliar dirt streets, scanning for yard sale treasures (found none). Visited bike shop, grocery store, and lawn mower shop on the way home. Got home around 3.
Observed along the way:

Utility lines must be pretty strong! That section of tree trunk looks to be over two feet in diameter and three-to-four feet long, And no doubt water logged.

Got on the scales this morning, and... [drumroll please]
I've lost five pounds in the past month! (Woohoo!)
Some of this loss is surely due to water weight fluctuations, but not all of it is. So, I've lost a few pounds of actual body weight in there somewhere. This week, I've swum laps at the pool twice and taken the dogs out for a long walk once. My goal for next week is to add in one more day of exercise - swimming, walking, or maybe even yoga.

...but it seemed like such a good idea at the time...
Way to go! and I bet the dogs also loved getting out for a good walk -- if my own experience with dogs is anything to go by.
Brainstorm: I would like to invent a new word to replace "lose" in the context of losing weight. "Lose" seems to imply accidental loss, and we would go looking to find it again. What we ought to say is something more along the lines of "discard". I think I've seen "reduce" -- maybe the British use it. Thoughts?
Say.... My shoulders get sore from hanging onto the handlebar of the bicycle for extended periods. I do some riding with one hand, and even no hands, and move my arms around, but it is still a problem. I'm thinking I need to do some real arm excercises. Thoughts?

see, I couldn't do that, unless, I gave up chewing gum.............Oldguy wrote:Since my 'puter died, I've been walking to the library to use theirs. 10 blocks, picking up cans and bottles along the way. Walking is great exercise in the springtime.

Minimal Carbs No Sugar
I'm about on month 6 of 8-10 carbs a day and no sugar. Prior to that I was on the eat whatever the hell I want that's convenient (read=fast junk "food") diet, and drank Cola like it was going to disappear off the face of the earth. I go hiking once a week, and biking 2-3 times, but I need to add something else to the mix to make any more progress. Lost about 30 pounds in the last 4 months, and maybe 5 in the last 2. Can't say I miss the carbs too much, but I do miss my Cola!. If you want quick results, I'd definitely suggest the low carb no sugar thing, for starters.
Waiting until I can think of a good 1...
Short but brisk ride this afternoon. Rode some dirt trails where the beer-bottle-throwers tear around in 4x4s, and sure enough, there was more MOOP than ever. Marking their territory, I suppose.
Also rode by a guys house just a few blocks from me. I've met him before -- told me he went to Burning Man once back in the drive-by-shooting-range days. Says he goes to Rainbow Gatherings instead now.
He asked me to bring him any surplus bikes I might have, to add to his front-yard sculpture:

Woohoo -- the latest storm is definitely over; all blue sky this morning. Already rolled the bicycle out of the living room onto the porch.
It being Saturday, I could go garage sale hunting in town, but maybe I ought to shoot out Morgan Valley Road for a more serious workout instead.
Probably Noonish -- kinda frosty out there still.
Blue sky but cold wind, so medium long ride at gentle pace. One post office, one yard sale and one flea market along the way.
Oh, and three Evasive Maneuvers! The first two were due to Girl Scouts selling cookies. Lead me not to mint flavored cookies, for I can find plenty of them on my own. Quickly the other way around the block. The third was a hot dog vendor at the flea market -- I outran that one also.
...scarf down too much? You mean like when I snuggle into my good chair with a book or magazine and a quart of mint-choloclate-chip -- then go back to the fridge for the other quart?
You are not the only one, and that's why we are here.
No cold wind today -- I'm going riding. Right now, might as well -- launch time: 12:35.
Returned at 2:15. First "full court" workout of the year. Around 13-14 miles, and no goofing off at yard sales. Made it over "The First Summit" on Morgan Valley Road, which means I'm four months ahead of last year's curve.
Add photo:

I counted nine. Maybe I ought to carry a real camera on these rides.

I have never in my life eaten a quart or even pint of ice cream at one sitting. Wow!

I 'fired' my Bikram hot yoga studio up here yesterday. The teachers have lately gotten into the habit of opening the doors halfway through and cooling off the studio...which freezes you when you're all hot and sweaty unless you're like so many of their students who come in wearing normal temp yoga clothes and then overheat after a few postures. The owner said she's not going to change so I asked for a refund of my class card and bid them goodbye. Bikram Yoga Santa Barbara has gone soft. I'll miss the classes but will workout at the gym more instead.
Its PI day! Had to have a bit of chocolate pie to celebrate...have crept up a bit to +11 pounds...ha keep me away from ice cream (and frozen yogurt) too, you folks are strong to resist them!

Sword training yesterday, plus clean 'n' jerk with my pet boulder, and wall mounts, then away to the hot tub.

Still walking and posting. If you see me here , I walked to the library.
Steamed up some carrots and cucumbers the other day. I bought two whole roasted chickens at the Food-Max in Yuba City. I slice off a piece of chicken, add some veggies and zap in the microwave to reheat. Very economical and healthy eating.
Got my bike tires aired up and tested on my street but haven't ventured out yet. Supposed to get into the 70's here later in the week.
I think I'll steam up some red. green and yellow peppers tonight. Maybe wilt onions and celery in olive oil with 2 or 3 cloves of garlic, then add the steamed peppers. I'm craving greens this Spring.
Oh yeah, time to get those garden plots started. That's great exercise too.

You left out the duct tape and razor wire
In recent days: Three more rides over the First Summit. It gets easier each time.
On one ride, I found somebody's Driver License in the road. The address was near by, so I delivered it to him -- before he even knew he had lost it.
Also put in one day of shoveling dirt-and-rock and repairing potholes in the street. (I live "in the country"!) Good upper body workout.

I've been hitting the gym alot more and actually working out, for the longest time the only time I went to the gym was to splash around in the pool. But now i've been putting alot of time on the eliptical to get sweaty, then grunt and groan in the free weight room for at least an hour. Been working the upper body mostly. So far no pounds lost, but def see muscles where flab used to be, and the weights are starting to get lighter.
What other people think about you is none of your business.
Only a minor setback: worked on my barn roof last Sunday and abused my trick knee -- which then went into its usual Protest Mode. So no riding the last six days. But the knee is coming around as it always does, and in the meantime I have eaten sparingly so I am slimming down. My barn-roofing partner Peter volunteered he could see the improvement -- not only on my belly, but on my neck also. I'm gonna be a lean-mean dude on the Playa this year!
