Geocaching at Burning Man
Does anyone know if there are Geocaches at Burning Man? If there are will they be listed on Geocaching(dot)com?
Thanx, Mis Behavin

Two threads.
Im an avid Cacher - the problem with Geocaches on playa is in the fact that you cant bury a cache. Its one of the rules. Another rule is that for a cache to be approved - you have to live near it, or be able to maintain it regularly the software used to kick out caches that were too far from your house.
The other problem is that not many people have internet access to upload the cache once its placed on playa during the burn. Its hard to pre-place on the playa because BM is always in a slightly different location so nothing is static.
have fun

Haha! Yes, there is geocaching at Burning Man! Check out GC1TFDB, this was our event last year. We are planning on doing it again this year. We are Camp Geosmached. The Black Rock Beacon also put on GC1RMXE, they'd post coords in the Beacon everyday for caches in different theme camps and gave out some pretty cool geocoins! We gifted pathtags last year. We plan on doing it again this year! Hope to see you out there! I'd thought about placing a few along the way, since I do live close enough to maintain them, but there really is no way to stop safely along that strech of highway during the BM rush.

PLAYACACHING
Playacaching
I'd like to get some thoughts on this idea.
If anyone can tear holes in it, it's the good folks on ePlaya (although I'd much prefer constructive criticism)
For those who aren't familiar with this activity, "Geocaching" is a game where anyone with a GPS can go to the geocaching.com website, download coordinates for a geocache (there's millions of 'em), put on their hiking shoes and visit said cache.
Caches are typically "themed" and contain a logbook and schwag. The idea is to visit, fill out the logbook, take some schwag, leave some schwag, and then carve a notch in your belt.
http://www.geocaching.com
The procedure for a normal geocache requires the cache to be placed and coordinates submitted to the website at which point the cache is reviewed by the organization and (usually) approved.
Since we are a temporary city, this procedure presents some insurmountable obstacles.
Enter "Playacaching"
Here's how I would imagine it could go down.....
PRE-PLAYA
\\ PLAYAcache owners create, populate and name cache.
\\ PLAYAcache owners upload cache data to playacaching.com website- all info (name, contents, camp info, etc) except coordinates
\\ Playacachers players download and print individual cache info from web.
ON PLAYA
\\ PLAYAcache owners set cache within their camp and note coordinates.
\\ Once set, PLAYAcache owners go to Playacaching camp to report coordinates.
\\ Coordinates are then posted, and players visit Playacaching camp to "fill in the blanks" (lat/long) on the cache pages they have printed from website
\\Throughout the week, players visit camps, log their finds, swap schwag and create meaningful, long lasting relationships.
\\ Partay on Friday. Drinking, Revelry, Prizes (most found, largest, smallest)
Thoughts??
Is anyone working on anything similar?
Would anyone like to work on this with me?

Thought I'd give this thread a bump since our annual Cache & Burn event has been posted!!
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... 8b00213db9
After the initial meetup at 6 o'clock and the man, we will be making it back to the Black Rock Center for Unlearning for a Bloody Mary bar! I will update the site once we have camp placement.

Ok, here's the final skinny on Cache & Burn III. Our actual event is going to take place at 10am, Thursday, Sept. 2nd, at 6:00 and the man. We will hang out there for about 15-30 minutes then head over to the Black Rock Center for Unlearning located at 3:00 & Detroit for Otter Pops and Bloody Mary's (or my personal fave...PBR & Clamato, don't knock it, til you've tried it!). A few of us will be wearing our tye-died Great Basin Easter Sierra Geocacher t-shirts, keep an eye out! We've gotten a killer pathtag made up, in fact they should arrive on my front porch in the next day or two.
Anyone attending the actual event will get one of these awesome Burning Man MMX pathtags! With that said, we do realize that playa time and other obligations make it really hard to attend certain events. Sooooo. our Cache & Burn Bar banner (also our logbook over the years) will be hanging on the side of Faith's (Cookie & Faith) motorhome located in the BRCU at 3 & D. You are more than welcome to come by and sign the log/banner at anytime during the week. If you do this you can claim the event and your smiley
We just can't guarantee any pathtags will be left.
