I agree LCN......I put a vortec v-6 in one of my Jeeps, with a 764 Chevy 4 spd. I took off the fuel injection, put a standard carb and had a standard ignition (cap, rotor etc) built for it.

then, you're not in BFE and the 'puter craps out and strands you.......you can always rig an old style ignition and carb to work somehow.

Of course, now, I've take the vortec out and am readying to install a 5 cyl 3L Mercedes diesel engine.....hahaa, no ignition at all!!
and, runs on most anything.

good luck with the install PM......and, give hugs to any EH crew that might want one from me......

G'morning Ygmir and ALL you other lovelies!
Meow~

Ya sorry Im still a coffee a holic. Your Tea smells good though...
Yes, Got over there last Night and Fixit already had the engine out!
Took him 8 hours! OMY.

But there will be 4+ people there to put it back in...
I have to be awake showered and dressed here before 8am to go down to Chmp to pick up the engine and gasket kit.

And yes, Boys...there is just something kinda wonderful about a straight Carb. I dislike mostest them new state of the art fuel injection systems...cause ya cant force 'em.

Im just a Chevy gal, like me a truck I can crawl in and self diagnose and 50-75% of time do all the work. I fit well in the Well.

(I dont do tranny's/skidplates and heads...I leave those to professionals.)
I dont usually rebuild carbs either, but my awesome Dad taught me how a couple years ago.(so I cant say I dont now....)
Funny did you know that on the original back up lights of a bug, the long screw that holds the light on the frame, is also the screw you use to take out the ball bearing floats in its carburetor!

A couple of yrs ago I had the opportunity to tear down to scratch my first 1952.5 1600cc air cooled vw baja, with my Dad.
Its my heritage. I come from a long line of mechanics...porche and vw.
It was kind of the first thing we had done with each other in a couple of decades.
Funny after growing up watching and listening by osmosis, my dad, uncles and grandpa work on thses. I had never attempted one.
I at some point got my first K5 Blazer, where as I began my mechanical journey on.So I quickly learned my way around the big blocks.
Then when it came time to re-build my daughters Baja, I said to self piece of cake....HAHHAHHAHAHAAAA....talk about stop drop and WTF????

I had to re-learn things all over again. I had always thought I learned engines from just being a snot nosed kid in the garage growing up.

The mechanical knowledge I found out is in my genes...not in my head, Dad had to totally teach me through the process as we tore the bug apart...the Bug was soooooo different from the big block. yes, it was similar in some respects but, sounds weird, but because of its simplicity it confused me a little.

..and re-timing the pistons/skid/bell house/timing belt...wow that was really different.(prob cause that was always something I farmed out due to not having a timing gun in my arsenal.

wow Im wordy today.

Well thats the history of how Piney got her groove!
Thanks Dad, I love you.

hey there PM.......
Image
here ya go.

yeah, it's sure weird. I'm guessing all my achy, sore back, slight headache is coming from changing from coffee to tea........

that's so cool you like and can do mechanic stuff.......

now, I try not to giggle when I see something funny.........especially, when you say it totally not that way.

Of course, it could just be me, and, my warped sense of humor, but, this struck me, like, I could make a joke.........

>>>>>>>"(I dont do tranny's/skidplates and heads...I leave those to professionals.) ">>>>>>>>>>>

I know what you meant, but, taken out of context......well, one could tease.......*chuckling*

anyway, if you get pics of the engine switch, I'm sure others would love to see the crew at work, as much as I would.

I'm told VWs are deceptively not simple, and most people get them wrong.

You can get very tunable fuel injection setups, to the point of having a setting for smog tests, one for efficiency and one for performance.
Just hit a button.
They get cheaper and cheaper.
There are tremendous gains even by upgrading older fuel injection, that was state of the art when built.
My bosch fuel injection on my 1986 volvo is a good example.
Upgrades run from a few hundred dollars to $2500 for a unit that can control a turbo up to 800 hp.
The high end one gains you 30hp, just by plugging it in, in default mode on a turbo.

Any older car is convertible to injection now.

Two Jeeps ago I stripped it down to the frame and rebuilt it back up. Had a Ford 289 with 5:38 gearing. That baby would crawl over anything. We used to carry spare jets so no matter where we were we could jet the carb to match the conditions. The Jeep I have today is a 2007 Rubicon. If anything goes wrong you just disconnect the battery for 30 seconds and let the computer reboot. In some ways it's no fun anymore.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

(in red) you may want to check your notes on that one.......some may disagree.

sure, things can be converted to fuel injection (not "real" fuel injection, but, throttle body type)
but, the point was, one slip of a wire, and, the computer chip shorts, or, whatever happens to it, and, it quits working, and, that's it, game over.......
with simple ignition and fuel delivery, you can "rig" it, to still get somewhere.
that's my only point, if you want it serviceable (especially in the sense of needing to improvise), the simpler, low tech, the better.

of course, IMHO.

Not throttle body, proper fuel injection and owner tunable.
Don't confuse the minimal systems designed for stock production injection with the programmable systems.
It's a different world.

There is more to fail, but the gains can be tremendous and can allow cars restricted by smog rules to run at high performance levels, clean.
Mileage gains are similar.
Carbs can be well tuned, but it is actually harder to get a carb tuned to the same level, and then it has one correct setting.

The editing cutoff stopped me from clarifying.
Manifold pressure was best when I last looked.
Now it seems the more advanced mass air are better, or at least easier.
No charge for the sleep.

Not throttle body, if you are talking about the old electric carburetors that dispense fuel, but proper fuel injection and owner tunable.
Don't confuse the minimal systems designed for stock production injection with the programmable systems.
It's a different world.
Many have air control that appears to be a throttle body, but injectors that are properly located on each throat.

Simple is nice.
I have a few carbureted cars and trucks.
No plans to change them, but the V8s don't get more than 15 mpg.
25 mpg with the big ford and twice the power.

There are throttle body systems that run a separate throttle body for each throat, which is a different thing from a single unit, and injectors are usually located differently from a carb.
Manifold pressure systems were superior for a time, but now mass air systems are advancing and measure humidity and other parameters once ignored.

Many systems appear to be less advanced than they are.
Older long intake systems are built with injectors near the valves, changing the operation and control.
This can be done with any older high performance intake with long runners.

Stumbles in, trips over the NEB and flops unceremoniously into it with a pleading look of desperation for that one thing that will make to world right. A cuppa YG's joe. My hero! I guess it's too early for the ladies to drop by Pity

At any rate, got to get it together for another weekend of tennis. Sort of my religion in a way. Should be sunny and in the 70's today. Do we live in a great place or what?
