Gypsy, BevMo probably has some good deals too if you can't access a Costco. Then of course there's Trader Joes. There must be one between Portland and the Playa.gypsy68 wrote:EmilyD - If I were going through Reno, it would be one of my stops. I am coming from the NW, so I go through Cederville. I just need to start hitting the liquor stores over the next few months.
You don't have to be skinny, naked and under 30 to be a Hottie!
"Go Home" packs.. tell me more about these?!?AntiM wrote:Chevy Trailblazer. Seats five, and we've done it that way. Cozy! Has a topper which holds the bedding and bulky costume items such as jackets. The trailer is an open utility trailer, about ten feet, it has slat sides and we pile it high, then tie and tarp the snot out of it, and hang the trikes and garden cart off the front and back. Both the SUV and trailer purchased with Burning Man in mind! Our commuter is something else entirely. The second vehicle will be a Toyota Scion XB. The vehicles hold all the light stuff, hats, hydration packs, camera bags, personal items, and the clean "go home" packs for the trip home. Sometimes it holds skeletons in the seats. We rarely take two vehicles, but it will give us more elbow room for our personal gear. Two in the Trailblazer, three in the Scion if the plan and gas prices hold.illy dilly wrote:What sort of SUV do you have? What size trailer?
So you pack the SUV and trailer full of stuff, then put passengers in the car?

Yep!
Very important. Especially if you have to drive cross country- you look/smell less suspicious and feel a ton better. Other trick is don't change into said clothes tell you get out of burning man. The Navajoes taco stand makes a good place for this.

What they said. But no one packs go home shoes, you can tell a cleaned up burner by their shoes. In Reno we saw a group of people walking across the blacktop parking lot, fresh faced and clean clothes, but a dusty footprint left after every step.
If you stay at a hotel after the event, send in the cleanest person to check in. And it is rude to go into a sit down restaurant fully playafied. We're used to it after a week, no need to force it on the mundanes. Our money is green, but our dust requires a huge tip.

I hate when you feel like you got all cleaned up, then you turn on the AC and POOF you get hit in the face with a plum of dust.
Run the car fan for a bit before you get cleaned up!

We got a car cover to try to keep dust out of the engine and vents, and we'll turn the A/C off before we arrive. Some folks say car covers will scratch up the paint, but we got a pretty decent one with a soft liner, and on our old car, I don't really care anyway. It will keep the inside cooler, too. Of course, then we have to haul the dusty thing with us on the way home!
Depends on what I find to paint.Bling wrote:What color will it be, so we can watch for you?
But, the odds are good it will have at least CFM as big as can be, and a multi-colored Day of the Dead skull. Kinda my thing.

(that would be moi et the captain of this ship)
About shoes; I recommend several pair (pairs ?
Since shoes are always right down there in the source of the dust, they get packed with dust. Even the laces become stiff with dust. My experience is that a pair of shoes are good for no more than two days on the Playa.
When I get back to my house, I wash all the playafied shoes with the garden hose. (Washing machine ought to work also.) Of course, not all shoes can tolerate such a water-soaking, so keep that in mind when you pack.
My Item For The Day is actually from last weekend, but here goes: I went to a Free Garage Sale just a few blocks away. He had a box full of LED lamps and various Stuff related thereto. Even a proper bicycle headlight. Free.

I'm taking way less shoes. Flip-flops (I was barefoot unless I left the camp block) and a pair of boots for night-time.
Last year I took like...slip-ons for around camp, sneakers and two pairs of boots. If not more (that I just can't remember).
I went mostly barefoot and the same pair of boots @ night.

the problem isn't that the covers are not soft on the inside, its the powder fine dust that will collect IN the cover and just start sanding away at yer paintBling wrote:We got a car cover to try to keep dust out of the engine and vents, and we'll turn the A/C off before we arrive. Yes, indeed -- assuming some of the stuff still works.illy dilly wrote:Score!
But that's nothing compared with This Afternoons's score:

A 1987 Mazda B2200. It does not run, but....
There has been a fire under the hood. Looks like the battery was not tied down and shorted against the hood. The carburetor needs to be overhauled or replaced. But engine oil and transmission fluid look like new, so I think the odds are good that the innards are OK.
Worst case scenario: I buy a $250,- Briggs & Stratton engine at Tractor Supply Co and build a simple chain drive.
I don't know yet if this will be the chassis for my Baby Grand piano, or for something else, but if the engine can be revived cheaply, then this is quite a score. All the body parts are available free, if any of you have a need for them.

GIN!
I HEAR ya gypsy68, I'm a gin girl myself. Vodka is okay too but beer makes me feel too full and wine makes me queasy. I like the taste of gin and my husband makes me a "perfect" martini (50/50 sweet and dry vermouth) and we've found a really delicious gin distilled in San Francisco: http://www.209gin.com/history.chtml but I also like Bombay Sapphire.gypsy68 wrote:EmilyD - I can get Beer and Wine in a grocery store. You just can't buy hard liquor in a grocery store. If I buy beer it's for others. Beer and Coffee, two taste I can't stand. I like my vodka. :D
