One Item for BM a Day (2010-2012)

Today I scored an awesome tent from freecycle. I told the gal I was headed to BM with it and she gave me her camping shower thing as well. Not sure I will use it or not, but, that was super nice.

I assembled the tent and its awesome. There are some mesh areas I will have to cover, but, I've got time. And, its a little smaller than I want as its only 7X7 and like 52 inches high inside. So, I am still on the look out for one. But, if nothing else, I now have shelter or an awesome storage closet! :)

I've spent the last two days solid dealing with a broken washing machine, finally fixed, but in the process of putting the garage storage area back together I found some old heavy duty canvas I used to use for display covers when I sold stuff at crafts fairs. Now we have a big, tough, lightweight rug for under our shade structure. It'll help keep the dust down a bit right outside our trailer. We'll nail it down with stakes and big washers (thanks AntiM) or tin can lids. It'll be so much easier to take home and clean than a rug.

It's a 1979 Honda CB 750 F Super Sport. Free, yes. Came with title and shop manual.

Now I have to figure out which (Mazda pickup and Honda motorcycle) to use for what sort of MV. Nice problem to have!

Of course, I need to get them running first.

Wow! Looks like it is in great shape, minus the dangling brake calipper and missing front fender.

I'd be tempted to restore the sucker.

Right; the calipers were sticking, making it hard to roll the bike, so I took them off (with a bit of "persuation" by hammer). And I do have the front fender. I even have the rear turn signals. Only 20900 miles. Missing the left side cover, though.

There is no way I'm going to restore it. I have a 1983 BMW R100 in perfect running condition, so that need is taken care of.

Of course, everything is for sale -- it's just a matter of price!

This may be the most desirable of the CB750s, and a flawless one sold for $3.000 on eBay recently.

At this point, I think the Honda will wind up powering the Baby Grand.

So my goals for today are

-Sort thru my tupperware and put the old ones aside to hold dry goods on the playa, good use for the ones I would possibly toss otherwise..
-Find the dome covers from last year- call around and see who has them
-Decorate the 5 gallon bucket [and lid] that will be used for trash. If its decorated its less likely to be mistaken for the recyclables one...
-Open my box of stuff from last year and clean everything!

That should take up most of the day.
But I need to prep now because I'm out of town for most of the month before the burn, and possibly July too..I need to be able to get home, unpack, grab my stuff for the burn and leave..

I found a great food vacuum sealer with an extra box of bag rolls at a garage sale for $4. Now I will look over my menus for ideas for vacuum sealed stuff......

I found some really cheap, comfortable, closed shoes online last night. I bought two pair, one for the Playa one for regular life. Also, me and the Mr. are inventorying our clothing (not costumes yet) and making sure we have enough of the basics (underwear, 2pr socks per day, cool-thin fabric for daytime, warm cozy stuff for night.) There is a lot of clothing on sale right now.

Last year we did Pot Roast (took a long time to warm up potatoes), Mac and Cheese mixed with Manwhich (worked awesome). Drop the bag in boiling water, wait a second....BAM!

Mac and cheese is a great lunch idea! Also for lunches will do turkey vegetable stew with stuffed portobellos and also a white chili. I'm definately going to use them to seal up good cheeses for afternoon cheese and crackers - clears room in the RV fridge for more fresh produce as I can put the sealed bags in a cooler without worry of leakage.

Today I traded in my pack from last year (it was too big and flimsh- I shop at a great canadian store that lets you return stuff it it "doesn't meet your expectations..." I may abuse the priviledge a little) for this great little minimalist bag. Just enough for a water bladder, dust mask, earplugs, cigarettes, trash back, tp, hand sanitizer.

I'm going to get/make some funky leather saddlebags for my bike to carry more water, layers, food, etc.

This bag is very lightweight! I'm also going to make some suede or fur covers for the straps so they don't chafe my shoulders.

I type good. My computer is not at a desk as most peoples are, but rather my keyboard is usually in my lap while I sit on the floor. Therefore my cat often decides to contribute to my conversations.

I would edit it to read "flimsy" but then your studies would be in vain.

A little gem of an idea passed on to me by a burner friend is to save toilet paper rolls that are almost used up (have about 2-3 uses left) to share for when the porto johns run out. I started a bag and we're just tossing them in. We could even pull out the cardboard bits...my dog loves to chew on them anyway. It's basically a stick...well it used to be.

One ply is important but more important is a TP with no or as little cotton content as possible. Most household butt wipe has cotton in it to make it feel soft. Cities sewer systems can deal with it fine but Burning Man's can't so well. Cotton plugs up the filtration machines that United Site Services brings to the playa requiring manual cleaning by hand by an individual in a stifling hot tyvek suit and other PPE. The only thing worse than cotton is baby wipes! Baby wipes are bad and cause an on going problem because people drop them in the potties. No baby wipes and no cotton containing TP.

RV type TP is generally free of cotton if you want to stock up before the burn. Also Robbidobbs (the supervisor of the potty project) drives around all week delivering extra TP to the potties and delivering her potty correctness message. If you see her handing out TP just ask for a roll to have on hand if needed. I'm sure the United Site Services guys would give you a roll too.

Put a new inner tube in the rear tire of my bike. Also replaced the kickstand that got kicked in half last year on the playa.

23 foot Glastron with two Volvo inline-four engines and a quite sturdy trailer. Free -- except for $40,- worth of gasoline to fetch it home.

If I were 40 years younger, my parents would say "Nothing good can come of this."

I'm thinking Mazda chassis under it, and a piano inside it.

Of course, this may not happen until 2011 or 2012. That's OK.

Oh! and I went bike shopping in a store today and found the perfect bike. It's a beach cruiser with big huge fat tires.
unfortunately the colour is not exactly my taste.

oh, and it's $900. not happening. boo. I'm continuing the kijiji shop for the perfect cruiser! My mountain bike last year was not so good.
