Went goodwill shopping today with my awesome daughter.

Got 2 camping chairs, some hats, a couple dresses, a cool vest with fur on it and a lizard for our camp.

purpleishealing.blogspot.com is my blog where I am starting to keep track of things while I get ready for BRC!

Collapsable Water Bottles

Post by EmilyD » Sat Apr 24, 2010 1:06 pm

Got a set of these for me and the Mr. They're super light and came with their own carabeener.

I know it's Target but sometimes you have to go into the belly of the beast to get the thing you need. At least they're made in the U.S.A. and all packaging is recycled paper.

Wow, those are really cool. I might try one for the regionals...it just doesn't carry enough water to tote around on-playa (for me).

I figured we'd freeze them and stuff into a small cooler that we strap onto our bicycle rack. We'd also bring along extra back-up water in some other kind of container to refill them when we're out and about.

I'm going to order a couple of these. my bike doesn't have the water bottle braze on attachments, and I like the idea of letting the bike carry some weight without the bottles clanking around inside the basket. the attachment point swivels for either handlebar, or downtube location. meijer has some inexpensive bike things, sweetskinz tires at about half price.

Solar Trickle Charger

Post by EmilyD » Mon Apr 26, 2010 12:40 pm

Today's item is a Colman Solar Trickle Charger I got to keep our extra deep cycle battery juiced. This is the one I use to power lights inside the VainVan when it's on display at night. I'm hoping the battery won't explode sitting inside my car all day in the heat with the windows closed!?!

EmilyD, why don't you get a few strings of Christmas lights to put inside your car at night. The LEDs last forever and use almost no power, so 4 AA batteries would last you a whole week. No inverters, no car batteries, no chargers---just lights! :D

I hang a string of LED lights over our table in the beginning of the week, and it stays on nearly all the time when it's dark out. I usually find them still on in the morning and still I use only one set of batteries.

Shambala, I already have strings of plug-in LEDs, an inverter and the battery but you do have a very good point. Not having to lug the extra battery around, and risk explosion, would be a big relief. It might be worth the small expense to redo the lights to be battery-powered. I do have some solar powered lights in there but they're crappy.

I "won" a super comfy wide bike saddle on Ebay this weekend. Yesterday I took the camelback for it's maiden trek and found that while it will be nice to have 2 liters of water while out and about ... I will need to fill and carry a water bottle as well. Sometimes I just want to take a big deep drink of water, and the camelback thing doesn't really do that.

I started to strip all the lights and junk of the playa bike, to rebuild it.

I'm testing the deep cycle battery today to see how long it'll keep my giant candy lights going. Then I'll test the solar charger to see how long it takes to recharge the battery. If it's all soso, I'll leave the entire mess at home and buy a shitload of batteries at Costco.

Yeah I'd like to know how well that works for you. I'm thinking about getting a similar set up, deep cell, inverter, and one of those solar deals. I'd like to hear how that goes.
