Anyone have experience with getting materials delivered to the playa?
Can I maybe hire somebody from say Reno to deliver 200 2x4's a couple days before the opening?
Any helpful advice appreciated. Thanks

Depends. Surely there's no problem, other than $$$, getting stuff to the entry gate. To go inside before opening you'll need to have an early entry authorization if:
1. You're with an registered theme camp that has early entry authorization, or,
2. You have a registered art project requiring early installation.
If no to the above, you're basically screwed. Read http://forms.burningman.com/ for more info re 1 & 2 above.

Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.
Great, thanks Dragonpilot. I'll look into it then. We'd rather pay for delivery than larger vehicles, more gas consumption etc...
We should have a modest registered art project (Helix Spire) that we would ideally assemble before the opening.

Yeah it is a lot of 2x4's, roughly a ton. We intend to build a modest helix shaped climbing tower. Here's an link to the eplaya thread: Helix Spire and a video:Shambala wrote:That's a lot of 2x4's. Whatcha gonna do with 'em?
Maybe the delivery advice could be related to what you're going to be making.
Also, (this is important) is this your first trip to BRC?

This will be my second burn. This is our camp from last year with our art offering (enlarged toy dino) and self service gifting station (Tape Me I'm yours!).

From the website under, http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/re ... guide.html
Deliveries To Black Rock City
Note: We are currently re-examining our deliveries process for 2010 to better assist camps, their vendors, and the Burning Man Project. Check back at this location for any updates to the delivery process that will also be announced later in the year through the Placement-Announce email list, and Jack Rabbit Speaks.
If your camp must receive a delivery from the outside world, You must be sure that the driver can find you. The driver must know your ON-SITE CONTACT’S NAME and THE NAME OF YOUR CAMP. Many camps have delivery mishaps because this information is not with the driver. Don’t let this happen to you! The gate will contact your Placer and the your Placer will alert you of their arrival. You will need to meet the delivery at the gate and escort them to your camp and back out of our city again. The placement-team will lend guidance as to the safest route to and from your camp. A credit card will be required of the driver before they are allowed to enter the city. One ticket per passenger will be charged to it. If the delivery vehicle leaves the city within four hours, the charges will be reversed. Cash will be accepted instead of a credit card. We recommend you:
Prepare your delivery driver to ask for you (your real name, your camp's name and approx. location) at the gate when he arrives. Give him as much information as possible about what to expect upon arrival.
When your camp is placed, make sure you remind your placer that you are expecting a delivery. They will be contacted by the gate when the delivery arrives -- someone from your camp MUST be available at that time, or the delivery will be turned away.
Travel to the gate when your delivery is due and introduce yourself to the Gate staff. Wait for your driver.
Escort your delivery in and out.
The Gate staff will LOVE you for this and so will your driver!

Thanks Motsky. fyi, i worked for HD for 4 years, in the delivery department cordinating trucks and deliveries. the drivers are 3rd party and do not work for home depot and your best interests are not in their concern.ibdave wrote:Call Home Depot in Reno.... They make a bunch of runs out to the Playa...They even bring a forklift to unload...![]()

the drivers are kind of hit and miss. some drivers will go the extra 9 miles to make you happy, just because they feel good that day. some drivers wont unload the truck because they have to drive the truck mounted forklift and extra 200 feet, because the 14 wheeler cant make the route due to size restrictions.
the delivery also has a distance charge. for the store that i worked for, we had a 60$ flat rate fee, whether you wanted a grill or 15 units of drywall. if you needed a second truck, then you get a second fee. but, you also get charged a dollar per mile outside of the 60 mile perameter. remember, these trucks get about 1 gph on the highway. someone has to pay for their gas. it might be worth your while to talk to a pro desk employee to determine your fee up front. the quotes are free and it's just a matter of sitting down with someone at the desk to get prices.
the drivers get touchy with directions too..... maybe mapquest your route out ahead of time and give it to the pro desk guy to give to the driver. it will insure your delivery.
oh yea..... they dont gurantee a time.... just a date.

Well, we wanted to burn, but we're a small group and don't currently have the man power for it.....so we are currently planning on a sawzall demo and a hand truck.

I heard back from Carmen at BWB, Here's what she said:

Your design looks cool! Good luck with your project.
