Out of the Frying Pan

Post by LemurLad » Sun Apr 25, 2010 3:37 am

A newfound friend of mine mentioned that he attended Burning Man last year, to this I queried, "What's Burning Man?" And from that moment on, I have been completely enthralled by everything that has happened on the playa.

For years, I've been searching for exactly this: a utopia of the self.
Burning Man looks to be just that.

August 30th couldn't come any sooner. :)

Thanks guys! I've done my share of desert camping, but does anyone have recommendations specific to the playa?

I'd tell you to ignore the clowns, but all too often I am one of them.
It's alkalai, and it's fine dust, not sand. I assume that you've dealt with high winds in your previous ventures, but you might want to reveiw those experiences. Have a hydration strategy. Or just keep drinking water. Make sure to have some sort of wearable lighting so you can be seen at night. Treat landmarks as temporary for navagational purposes.

It's a start at least.

Keep your hands inside the Deathcart at all times.
Please don't feed the Bandersnatch.
Bring plenty of Everclear.

How about a big flag/banner over my group's site? I've heard a lot of the fun is in getting lost, so I might just skip that, heheh.

We're going to build 2 or 3 of these great domes: http://www.fetchaphrase.com/dome/index.html
and do them up as planets, probably with glowing rings encircling them. :)
They seem pretty cheap and look snazzy to boot!

There's no limit to the size a non-theme camp can be, yeah? Just not too crazy big?

The big flag will work for a block or so, at night it will need lights. And that's if your flagpole doesn't snap in the wind. I saw some great banners on sturdy fiberglass poles just snap over one day. Anything colorful will be playa beige by the end of the week.

You just have to roll with it some days.

Planet domes! I love that idea.

Hint: the orange poles at the intersections have the street number and letter on them for when the street signs get stolen. Don't cover them up with anything like notes or flyers.

Trusty landmarks have a habit of going up in a blaze when you're out traipsing about the desertscape. Then how will you find your home again?

Welcome, Lemur lad! You've already gotten a few of the basic survival tips! If you keep reading over the next few months you'll get rest!
As for my tip of the day: Bring precooked food, because its way to hot to cook during the day, and at night there's much better things to be doing than cooking!
Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole
