Black Rock Emergency Services Dept report for '09

Post by phil » Tue Apr 27, 2010 2:48 pm

http://afterburn.burningman.com/09/play ... gency.html

I'm confused in some paragraphs, but I think they left 2008 in instead of replacing it with 2009. Generally, "4,461 patient contacts in 2009," mostly walk-ins with stuff like blisters and cuts. Other issues were dehydration and eye problems, with urinary tract infections a significant number (my personal guess is that this is related to not drinking enough water, but your guess may be better than mine). Just over 80 patients for alcohol- or drug-related problems. Wow. 80.

In other medical news, Danger Ranger is out of surgery, and the doctors put everything back on they could. No specifics, though. The rumor is he cut off three fingers. No pictures, so you can't believe it yet.

Insect bites 1.3%...WTF...I didn't think bugs made it out to the playa. OMG, you don't suppose they were talking about crabs or head lice?

One of my most popular photos on flickr:

The best guess is that there was a spider brought with him to the playa in his sleeping bag or other clothing.

I was lovingly serviced by a charming lady doctor from Ukiah. Wish I'd gotten her number.

>>>>Just over 80 patients for alcohol- or drug-related problems.<<<<

sounds low for 2009.

There are black widows, scorpions, spider mites, camel spiders, hippies, etc. on the playa margins. Sometimes they inadvertently get blown onto the playa.

Freakin' Camel Spiders.... they don't even have to bite me to be lethal - they can do me in with a dose of terminal ugly.

"Danger Ranger is out of surgery, and the doctors put everything back on they could. No specifics, though. The rumor is he cut off three fingers. No pictures, so you can't believe it yet."

He came damn close. Danger Ranger maintained a very positive state of mind throughout his time before and at the hospital, according to his Twitter tweets. He even tweeted the pic of his x-ray, which showed the third, fourth and fifth metacarpals cut (bones cut, but the hand didn't come off, and he didn't lose fingers like Danger Ranger thought he would in his first tweet. Thank goodness!
