I'm testing the deep cycle battery today to see how long it'll keep my giant candy lights going. Then I'll test the solar charger to see how long it takes to recharge the battery. If it's all soso, I'll leave the entire mess at home and buy a shitload of batteries at Costco.
Yeah I'd like to know how well that works for you. I'm thinking about getting a similar set up, deep cell, inverter, and one of those solar deals. I'd like to hear how that goes.
It's been eight hours straight and the battery is still powering a string of 12 regular (not LED) Christmas lights. I'm checking it every hour.

illy dilly if you can find a combined unit deep cycle battery/inverter it's much less hassle than my set up. They do tend to cost more though.

the Duracel is about $135.00 on Amazon & you can charge it with a solar panel.

I just added five leis, 30 strings of New Orleans type beads, one large bubble wand, one large sock monkey, one large stuffed snake and three ten foot strings of led lights to my BM box. Only four months to go. Dang – just looked out the window and it’s snowing.

Hmmm actually there are many bad reviews on this battery. I was thinking of maybe getting one simply because it's less equipment to haul around but it doesn't seem as reliable as what we've already got going.

Lights STILL Going!

Post by EmilyD » Thu Apr 29, 2010 8:48 am

WOW, WOW!!! The lights I'm testing on the deep cycle battery/inverter set up are STILL GOING! I started the test on Tuesday at 2pm, it's now Thursday at almost 9AM! Now I'm just trying to drain the battery to test how long it takes the solar charger to recharge it. DAMN! This thing holds a lot of juice!

I saw this fucking AWESOME custom-made belt/harness thing at a shop in Portland in February, it fit me perfectly and I said "I'll come back and get it for Burning Man."

A week later we were in New Orleans, and on Mardi Gras day we ran into some west coast burners, and, lo, one of them was wearing it. They had just all taken a bunch of E and were on their way to go have a sex party (seems like odd behavior for burners) and the guy was whisked away by his friends before we could talk to him further. Fuckity fuck.

I also passed on a $35/pair of russet Doc Martins that fit me perfectly but had a 3" sole. Then I went to a concert and thought, "Man, if I was three inches taller..." They're gone. Who the fuck doesn't want $35 platform-sole Doc Martins?! They would have looked WICKED with my copper Vader helmet and disco stripper pants...

A good opportunity to remind folks to MAKE A UNIQUE CUP AND CARRY IT WITH YOU so you don't look like a newbie when somebody offers you a drink and you have to bum a disposable cup, which probably has somebody's lipstick on it already. We're not bringing disposable cups at all this year.

I forget to bring a cup every year, but, fortunately I've always been able to rummage a small one up out of our camping gear.

Don't drain the battery completely. It is best to not drain past the 50% mark of the battery capacity. Once you go below that point it can damage the battery.

It is also good to have a trickle charge on lead-acid batteries daily. This helps prevent the above damage even if you dip down on the overall charge.

Nope Fire_Moose, it's not hooked up to any charging source. It finally stopped powering the lights this afternoon around 4pm. Tomorrow I'll try the solar charger and report back.

Not yet. The bike baskets are just like these, though: http://cgi.ebay.com/BICYCLE-BIKE-FLOWER ... 646wt_1074.

They're even cuter in person! My sweetie said the flowers won't affect his masculinity. 8)
