Mayor Bloomberg slams Arizona's anti-immigrant law: 'We are committing national suicide'

A fired-up Mayor Bloomberg warned the U.S. "is committing national suicide" by passing the buck on implementing comprehensive immigration reform.
Hizzoner delivered the blunt message Wednesday as he criticized Arizona's harsh new anti-immigrant law.
"This is not good for the country. I don't agree with it," he said. "We love immigrants here."
Bloomberg said that because federal lawmakers have failed to tackle the thorny issue, lawmakers in states like Arizona have taken matters into their own hands.
"This country is committing national suicide," Bloomberg said.
The Arizona law allows cops to stop anyone they think is in the country illegally and arrest folks who can't prove their immigration status or citizenship.
Bloomberg deemed it an invitation to harassment.
"We have to get real about the 12 million undocumented here," the mayor said. "We're not going to deport them. Give them permanent status. Don't make them citizens unless they can qualify, but give them permanent status and let's get on with this."
Bloomberg spoke as he thanked volunteers at the "Citizenship Now!" hotline sponsored by the Daily News and City University of New York, which helps callers who want to know how to become citizens.
He called on President Obama to lead the fight to overhaul the nation's immigration rules. "I will be there behind him supporting him 100%," he said.
Bloomberg long has been a supporter of immigration reform, saying current law deters international companies from sending employees through border hassles to work in the U.S. - and freezes out the highly skilled immigrants America needs.
"We don't have doctors, and we're not allowing people who want to come here and be doctors to come here," the mayor said. "This is just craziness."
"People are developing new drugs in India, rather than here. They're going to win the next Nobel Prize in China or in Europe, not here. If we want to have a future, we need to have more immigrants here."

Now what makes you think I have not been paying attention to Bloomberg?
First off, I'm from N.Y. not from a backward hick state or town.
I know exactly what he is doing and so does he.
Yeah, I know about what he did with the Taxi's in N.Y. and what he wants with Virginia and the guns.
He and I have the same concern when it comes to guns tho. I like guns myself, but when you have idiots like the Tea Party involved, I think you may be the one to think twice when it comes to nitwits like that having guns.

NO, NO, NO !!!
Not the peace prize. That's what we use to prove to the world what a peace-loving country we are.

Because he routinely reverses his position, depending on who he is speaking to.
If he told me the sun was out, I would look out the window.
I think he is severely distorting the immigration issue.
But then, the wealthy often benefit from a reduced standard of living.
Funny.
Thanks to bloomberg and the lack of self defense there. I think of nyc as extremely backwards and deprived.

from reading the serious amount of empty malformed rhetoric, in the last two pages of this thread, I have now an even lower opinion of my fellow man who for lack of imagination and fear, grasp at the status quo, politicos, and green bits of paper, with the same predictable reliability as a drunk wife beating redneck who gets a hard-on every time he sees a goat sphincter. It is Ritual de lo Habitual. and to think, it's not even campaign season. [ Please note: I am actually a sock puppet for A Radical Neo-Anarchist-shirtcocking-tax dodger, who for lack of better reason; other than boredom, likes to throw wrenches at peoples heads, especially if Said people be either Greedy-fearfilled-buttkissers or inebriated-sphincter fixated-misogynist from either N.Y. or A.Z ]

Nothing anyone can do about that.
Think not?
Try it.
Bloomberg did the right thing when he knew the wrong thing was not the thing to do.
It's why he was a Dem at first, then a repub, now an Indy.
He knows what he is doing and is what is the right thing for this country.
N.Y. gave him the power.
This is the way it is. Like it or not.
If one cant defend themselves, they are not worthy.
You have no idea what old money is about.
I'll tell you tho......
it's about experience.
Only 2 places have that in the states.

Demagogy or demagoguery (Ancient Greek δημαγωγία, from δῆμος dēmos "people" and ἄγειν agein "to lead") is a strategy for gaining political power by appealing to the prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public—typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist, populist or religious themes. What qualifies as demagogy has been the subject of debate and ambiguity since Aristophanes first used the term, in reference to Cleon.

Well, after giving it much thought, I can not discover the source of your confusion. Since you highlighted the word "comment" I'm guessing that you have a problem with this word.dr.placebo wrote:can't sit still wrote:Dr Placebo, for th first time, your post doesn't merit any comment or rebuttal.
It's a simple word, nothing like; "begs the question".
There is nothing that I can tell you if you don't understand simple English. I've studied 5 languages. This has made me very aware of the permutations of meaning in my native language. I know that a "moot" point is a VERY important point. I know the actual source and meaning of "tinker's dam".
I wrote a book and many articles. I've never had a problem with confusion on the part of readers. I try to be exact but, not pedantic. If you are confused, there is nothing that I can offer.

Arizona police officer sues over immigration law
http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/04/29/ari ... index.html
By Catherine E. Shoichet, CNN
April 30, 2010 11:38 a.m. EDT
(CNN) -- A police officer in Tucson, Arizona, asks that local law enforcement be exempt from enforcing the state's new immigration law in a lawsuit filed in federal court on Thursday.
Officer Martin H. Escobar claims in the suit that the law will "seriously impede law enforcement investigations and facilitate the successful commission of crimes."
He also says there are no "race-neutral criteria or basis to suspect or identify who is lawfully in the United States," including a person's proximity to the Mexican border, linguistic characteristics and capabilities, skin color, clothing worn or the type of vehicle driven.
The law, signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on April 23, allows police to ask anyone for proof of legal U.S. residency. Brewer and others who support the law have said it does not involve racial profiling or any other illegal acts.
"Racial profiling is illegal," Brewer said after signing the bill. "It is illegal in America, and it's certainly illegal in Arizona."

But Escobar's suit says the law "is the product of racial bias aimed specifically at Hispanics" and places every Hispanic within the state at risk of losing his or her constitutional rights.
Brewer, Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, the city of Tucson and Pima County Attorney Barbara LaWall are named in the suit.

Escobar asks that local law enforcement be exempt "from engaging any immigration stops, questioning, detention, citing or any law enforcement activity reserved to the federal government."
Escobar, 45, is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Mexico and immigrated with his parents when he was 5 years old, attorney Richard M. Martinez said.
Tucson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Fabian Pacheco declined to comment on the case because city policies prevent employees from discussing pending litigation. But he said Escobar has worked for the department since 1995 and patrols Tucson's south side.
Martinez said his client has spent years working to break down barriers between the Police Department and the predominantly Hispanic community.
"All this law does is put the barrier back up. ... It takes away trust and the rapport and relationships," he said Thursday.

My understanding is the primary engagement must be based upon suspicion of transgressing of other laws. The LEO"S are not primarily seeking illegals, it only comes into play during other enforcement activities.
