Looking for welder to help with Mutant Vehicle in Sacramento

Post by fountainpen6 » Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:19 pm

I received my invitation to bring my Mutant Vehicle to BM 2010! Got the base vehilce in my garage and I'm itching to get started. Only issue is that I need some assistance from someone with welding skills to help me fashion a simple frame. Any welder in the Sacramento region feeling creative and want to help? Pizza and beer? Wine and cheese? MV rides on the playa? :-) THANKS!

I don't think it will take long. It's configuring a metal frame around a golf cart that will eventually become a spaceship. Since I have your ear, can you weld to the metal body or do you need to weld to the frame of the cart for stability? It doesn't need to hold tons of weight as I'm using fairly light weight sheet metal as the covering. Also need to weld a couple of pipes to the cart to slip two PCV pipes over that will be the armature for an alien atop the ship. Any help you can give me would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! When do you plan to be in Sac? Thank you!!!

not seeing the construction of the cart, its hard to say what the best answer is, but in general it is best to attach to the frame. THat being said some things are built better than others and the body might hold it up. Don't forget it will also need to stand up to the wind and vibration.

I'm not sure when exactly I will be down there. Still waiting for parents to decide on the house color before I can even start to think of helping them paint.

also do you have a 220v power supply near your work area? most welders need 220v (mine included)

I'm too far away to weld it for you, but having built many playa vehicles I'll say build it as strong as possible.
You can probably scrounge up a simple, easy-to-use 120-volt wire-feed welder on Craigslist for maybe $100 or so.

OK I looked at Sacramento Craigslist... no great deals on a wire-feed but there were cheap stick-welders.

For $100, you can get a 110V wire feed welder at Harbor Frieght. $80 for a welding mask and gloves, and you too can weld.

Blue Collar Supply on Power Inn Rd for all you metal needs.

more like you can weld little itty bitty things with at harbor frieght welder, assuming you know how to weld in the first place. I did just pick up a helmet there this week though.
