Fire at Camp

Post by babysnakes » Mon May 17, 2010 5:44 pm

We're planning on having a fire pit/barrel at our camp this year. As far as I can tell from the BM site, there isn't any kind of permit or anything required for this- just common sense and ensuring you keep the burning up and off the playa and out of the reach of flamables.

That's all I need to know, right?

I believe it's 20 feet from tent's and such.. and not to be left unattended.

It can not be within 25 feet of any potentially flamable item. In other words a clear space of 25 feet all around the fire must be maintained. Some one must watch it and extinguish it at official request or high wind. 5 gallons of water must be on hand to extinguish the fire.

The burn barrel, (or car bque if you are in Gigsville) must be elevated as not to cause a burn scar to the Playa. If your fire leaves ash etc, that is considered moop. All the info from Motsky is spot on.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.

for your burn barrel, get a round bbq grill replacement top that fits on top, a seasoned cast iron pan and lots of bacon.

Makes for a very nice evening to fry up bacon, drink cold beer and giggle at the bacon grease flares when you dump the pan for the next batch of crispy pig goodness.

Last year the survival guide said 20 feet.

Since I copied it to paste elsewhere, may as well do it here too:
FIRE GUIDELINES: Safety is essential.
All structures must be 20 feet from any burn pit or barrel. Do not burn anything but wood and cardboard in these barrels; burning plastic and trash releases toxic fumes. Do not overfill the large "Burn Pyres" on the Esplanade. You must monitor what you burn so it does not fall out. You must bag and haul ash from anything burned. Aerial flares, rockets, explosives and fireworks are prohibited in Black Rock City and could result in a fine. Straw or hay bales are not allowed. Respect artwork. If artwork is to be burned, ONLY the artist who created it may ignite it. No fires of any kind are allowed on the unprotected playa surface.

Thanks!

(and WORD on the bacon)

I would love that but since we have a bunch of veggies and vegans in the camp and I'm an ex-vegan, I think I'll have to pass on that beautiful idea.
Fried tempeh bacon maybe?
