Acupuncture, before surgery and before cortisone. After the acupuncture kicks in, you must go for physical therapy because even the acu doesn't last forever.

Even though I'm down some pounds from winter (no scale at home), that little "sausage" around the middle is darned hard to get rid of!

It's so horrible that I instantly know exactly the joke that came from.

Well, I've tried riding a beach cruiser and some other tricks, but the shoulder still acts up. This is two years in a row, so it's not going away.

I am indeed interested in trying acupuncture. It makes no sense to me, but I keep hearing that it works.

So I'm riding less and walking more. Luckily, we have a gorgeous State Park with miles of hiking trails just a few blocks from my house. I've hiked every inch of it in years past, and the place is absolutely lovely. There is an Old Ranch House from 1870, and they hold all sorts of events there. Of course, "Old" Ranch House from 1870 A.D. is relative -- people have lived there for thousands of years.

Most of the trails are dry much of the year, but one stretch goes over a full time creek -- on a boardwalk:

I generally prefer bicycling to walking, but I don't mind walking here! Come late summer, the place is awash in blackberries.

Been hitting the gym 3x a week, run 5k on the treadmill, then freewieghts, and cool down with 2 miles on a bike. Still haven't lost any lbs, but feel stronger...
We have a thing in at our house. Sunday calories don't count...so thats why the scale stays the same, my excuse is I don't want to work out to look/feel better, I just want to eat more ice cream!

Ooh! I reeeallly like this post.

Last year BM ( okay does any one else read that as bowl movement??)...ahem Burning Man, I was in super good shape because I was a waitress. Now I'm a medical coder ( ie on my ass ), life and stress kicks in, have some ups and downs but now I just want to tone up.

I joined a Mixed Martial Arts club and it's pretty fun. So far Kickboxing is the funnest. My legs are to long for jui jitsu, and I'm not THAT flexible.

I also want to start to play with some poi, I've never done that but I think it would help with core strengthening.

Also, here in Montana there are NO good dance clubs. GoGo dancing was the best way to stay fit! Get paid and exercise, great! Here they would confuse me with a stripper and then be really disappointed when I don't get nekkid.

Any one else out there have some suggestions on things to do for exercise that don't feel like it? Especially cheap things? I'm looking into hiking and riding my bike when its stops randomly snowing.

I'm thinking this might be in order. I don't have any gear but I'm positive there are places to rent. Best case would be I make some friends at my job who have gear and would trade it for dinner or something. I have a tendency to buy gear before I'm committed to using it/justifying its cost :(

I need to suck it up and use my rain gear/cold gear I have and do some hikes. Its intimidating though because I'm new to the area.

Shoveling snow is a great work out though!

No, but medical types sometimes read it as bowel movement. (Yes, I know -- darned English majors!)

Welcome to the fitness club thread! Any swimming pools up there? Swimming is supposed to be the (more or less) best excercise, since it works pretty much every muscle in the body.

I dunno, I've heard of people suffering a heartatack using a snowblower, which is what I use and it can be a workout as well.

Man, I spell checked that sucker and every thing :( BOWEL! haha

So I went on a road trip and found a whole bunch of fitness magazines in the back of the car. I totally thought they'd be heinous... and they were slightly...but turns out the "fat burning zone" is sort of a myth. I knew it! Always thought that was BS. The best way to really loose fat and tone is to do a short warm up cardio, interval training and then weight training to build muscle which boosts metabolism.

I always wondered why I could go on a medium intensity run for an hour 5 days a week, all the while eating healthy and not loose any inches! So I guess that's why.

I know it's cheesy but I LOVE Jullian Michael's 30 day shred, she does three different levels of 20 min interval work outs. And if your moral compass allows you can DL a torrent to check it out.

My improved work out schedule:

Monday:
20 minute run ( I always walk for 10 mins run for 20 then walk 10)
20 min JM video
20 min arm using dumb bells and medicine ball

Tuesday:
1.5 hours kickboxing

Wednesday:
20 minute run
20 min JM video
20 min core w/ dumbbells and medicine ball

Thursday:
1.5 hours kickboxing

Friday:
20 minute run
20 min JM video
20 min legs, probably some Pilates, squats, and lunges.

Sat: relax day
Sun: carb day!

I think I might start a blog to update my progress and post pictures and what not.

My biggest challenge will be two days a week I work 12 hour shift, so I think I'll need to work out in the morning before them because at night I'll be exhausted.

Question time! How do you all stay motivated?

For me I think my blog will help, along with progress photos and measuring tape. I HATE the scale because it lies to me. Maybe I'll weight my self once a month but eh. Also looking at picture of when I was fitter, helps me remember I can totally do this and have done it before. Also having Sundays be my carb day. Still eating healthy but letting my self have a delicious pizza or a huge Italian sub MMmm. They say it helps with metabolism so yay!

I'm not staying motivated. Right now I'm struggling with mild depression and some lovely preimenopausal symptoms which are kicking my butt.

But them, I'm 53, overweight and a slacker with arthritis in my feet, back and hips. I whine a lot. No, I do not have access to a pool.

But I think about trying a lot.

Sometimes just listing my whining faults keeps me going.

I can relate a little. I have pretty horrible PMDD. It is SO hard to stay motivated when I have such ridiculous depression/roller coaster moods. I hate how medication makes me feel, so I'm just trying to moderate it with exercise and nutrition. I can't say that I know what your going through ( sometimes it bothers me a little when people say that to me, its like, maybe they think they know but unless it is REAL similar they probably don't )

good luck in your journey AntiM

AntiM, I thought you said earlier that you have access to a pool on base? Not trying to weasel out of that, are you?

Oh, and I do know a bit about mood swings and such, even though I'm male. My brother and I both inherited some crap of that type. Hang in there! Regular excercise really helps!

There is a pool on base, I don't drive. No weaseling.

I know exercise would make things better, but some days I barely get the house basics done. Worse slump than usual, I know what to do, but it feels as if I were encased in slow motion apathy gel.

D-moth, I hear ya on the medications.

Hey, I gardened, lightly, today.

Yay, Thanks Elliot and Ugly Dougly!

AntiM- Gardening is super great way to be active! Even if it's lightly.

Today I went to Costco to stock up on healthy foods. Lots of low fat proteins and veggies.

My favorite energy booster/snack is frozen berries, super ripe banana, soy milk and about 3 cups of baby spinach in a blender. You can't taste the spinach and you can get a whole serving in there. Plus is suuuper tasty and cheap.

Tonight I'm doing kick boxing then woman's self defense, which is jiu jitsu based. Lots of arm bars, choke holds and such.

Started my blog today. Thank goodness my partner is a uber nerd and helped me set it up!

diamondmoth.com. Not sure how to get my icon to show up but working on it. Should get my "beginning" stats done some time in the next few days.

I do like raw spinach and put it in all my salads. I also prefer it to lettuce on sandwiches. My favorite light meal lately is a whole wheat tortilla spread with pesto, topped with garlic cloves (microwaved first), spinach, shredded carrots and a hint of shredded cheese, then baked on a pizza stone for ten minutes at 450 degrees. nummy num nums.

I use rice milk instead of soy milk. I'm supposed to severely limit my soy intake after the breast cancer, which was estrogen positive. Soy encourages estrogen production, so not a good idea for me.

Soy has phytoestrogens, and so do many plant foods, including barley and hops.

Milk comes from cows, meat comes from dead cows. :)
