Newbie coming!

Post by sweetpoisen22 » Tue May 25, 2010 9:14 am

I am beyond thrilled and excited to be going. This is my FIRST TIME! Talk about being a Newbie! I'm also going alone (tear) but know I will make friends and find kindred spirits.

Am an blond hippy-ish surfer chick who spends all my extra time flying in silks and thinking about ways to make fairy wings. (Feys and fairy's exsist, ok?) I am a co-owner of the only aerial silks studio in San Luis Obispo, CA and love what I do. (I <3 my students). I also hoop and spin poi and just started fire fans.

I've got that "I'm so excited I'm about to throw up" feeling, but think this is going to be one of the best experiences of my life.

(I'm on the blue silks)

I spend my extra time reading the forums and scouring websites. I've got ideas... but no expectations.

Welcome!
I know the feeling! This is my second year and I still feel like that. Just wait tell you have everything packed, the car loaded and you turn on the car to start the drive to BRC! You're gonna love it!

Alone? If you want I am going with a few friends (and maybe a few I don't know) for my first BM experience. Reality is I might be spending most of my time by myself on the Playa. If you want, we can set a time and meet at Center Camp to go explore. You can tell me about aerials as we climb up stuff. :P

im heading out from santa barbara solo as well, so don't feel too isolated. i feel mildly irrational when i start getting panicky about being out there.

am i alone in that?......

I'm not panicky about being out there but I am a little about my safety. I know most people out there are good people who won't do anything to hurt me. But as a woman who has been raped, you never fully get that trust of the world thing back (I guess that the best way to describe it). Before I go, I am looking into Nevada's concealed weapon laws. I won't do anything illegal but I also think I should be able to defend myself and have carried knives with me camping for years. Thsi will be especially important if I end up camping alone because my friends decide they want to be a part of a Theme Camp.

There are so many people going solo and are worried about being "alone" all week. Before you even get to BRC, you will meet new friends. Don't panic about meeting people--the big problem is going to be meeting way too many people. I like to head off in any direction in the morning by myself and just explore, meet people and take pictures.
In short, attending solo is very appropriate and will work out perfect for anyone. No expectations--just show up for the party!!!

:D
FaeTora, I like to think that Burning Man may restore that trust-in-people for you.

That said... "Black Rock City" is just that -- a city of 45.000 people. I doubt any city of 45.000 on earth goes a week without somebody doing something bad to somebody else. We humans simply have not evolved past that yet.

But arming yourself? On the road there, perhaps. But in BRC, I would say "no way" -- even if you could get a permit that overrides the general firearms ban at the event.

Now back to SweetPoisen and her silks!
:D

Ouch. I'm sorry you've been hurt that way. As compared to many other American cities, I think people on the playa are possibly more likely to respond to a call for help, fwtw. You might want to look into this group. We advocate for rape prevention on playa. We should be giving 3 play shops on the issue this year.

There is a fairly large group of Burners in and around the central coast headed out this year. You should get in contact with us. No need to go at it solo!
