Taping the door jams on yer vehicle...
Does it work? Last year was my first and I saw a lot of vehicles taped up and wondered if it did much to help or not.
Thanks in advance!

Merci, Cedric. Remind me, we'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

This was probably done by first timers trying to be resourceful. This tape will bake on your car in the hot desert sun, and cause a mess. Further, there are rubber seals in all the doors that keep water and normal weather out of the car. Even more further, what if you actaully have to get in the car during the week, will you retape this up on a dusty vehicle?

I've used clear shipping tape, but I was taping stuff to the van. One year I had a giant city map taped to the side, then the following year I covered one whole side of the van with a heavy coated gloss paper for people to draw/write on as they passed by. Now while this did nothing for keeping dust out, the tape held, and did not leave any kind of sticky mess.
Plus, you are not going to be able to tape up all your doors before you hit the dust, cause the gaters will open everything to check for contraband. Taping the hood, prob wouldn't be a good idea, and wouldn't really do anything since the dust will come up from under the vehicle.
but....YMMV.

Or if you're "lucky" you can find that greeter who uses the shop vac to blast you and your car with playa dust, saving you from worrying about the inevitable.Fire_Moose wrote:Puh-lease. when you get there throw a couple handfuls of playa into yer car. then you dont need to worry about a little bit sneaking thru the cracks
(2 inch or wider painter's tape if you feel the need, but I would spend the money on other things like more to Drink!)

Try just bringing a sheet to cover the dash with, and maybe some cheap seat covers. If you're getting into the back and not the front, hang a sheet or plastic "bulkhead" to keep the low-traffic area cleaner.

Dust will get into everything. To clean the inside of your car, use a DRY MICROFIBER cloth. Especially on rentals, clean before you return, but only a dry cloth or the dust will turn into mud and be nearly impossible to clean. There are also lots of community car washes on the way out of BRC. So pack this cloth and bring it with you!

If you need tape to keep dust out of your car, get a new car. Here's a tip that's saved me trouble, in the past: upon arrival, remove the negative terminal on your car battery. Just in case the doors get left open, or not completely closed. You'd be surprised how interior lights can drain a battery...over a weeks time. Happened to me in 2001.
anything worth doing is worth overdoing..
Taping doors is not necessary since there are rubber seals
around all door edges.
OTOH it's a good idea to turn off the vent/AC fan as you leave the blacktop.
On arrival at your campsite, It would be good to open the hood
and take over the intake fresh air ducts. They are usually up near the
windshield wipers but can also be lower down like near the headlights.
I did this to my rental car last time & had no vent system dust post-playa.
No duct tape please. Plastic or gaffers tape is good.

We just use really big Ziplock bags that we purchase at the Alice in Wonderland stores. Worked like a charm. You drive right into them and yellow and blue make green when you zip it up that way you know when you have an effective seal.
Taping really doesn't work.
Drop the 150 for a detail and get new cabin filters after you get back.

Taping
We use wide blue painters tape BEFORE we get to the playa. We do as much as we can from the inside then outside too. Works great for us especially if you need someplace to go to catch your breath during a dust storm.

My bad. I didn't give enough info. My "vehicle" is an RV and yes, you do have to open the doors occasionally. I find that during a dust storm there is less dust floating in the air when I'm inside with the windows taped. I'm not suggesting the dust doesn't get inside because it takes a good week to get most of it out and it's never completely gone. I get all warm and fuzzy when I pull something out of a cabinet six months later and it's coated with fine playa dust!FaeTora wrote:I think this might have been stated before, but if there is a dust storm, you have to open the door so the tape doesn't really help you does it? I know i can't make my windows roll down from the outside.
