Our neighbors next door give no indication of encouraging their children to learn English. I simply do not see movement toward integration progressing from one generation to the next.

In my experience, that is the rule, not the exception. My Guatemalan friend, Hugo [and his wife] were careful to speak English in front of the kids. They eventually learned Spanish, but, it' secondary. His kid is at the top of his H.S. class.

24.9% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally

40.1% of all inmates in Arizona detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally

48.2% of all inmates in New Mexico detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally

29% (630,000) convicted illegal alien felons fill our state and federal prisons at a cost of $1.6 billion annually

53% plus of all investigated burglaries reported in California, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and Texas are perpetrated by illegal aliens.

50% plus of all gang members in Los Angeles are illegal aliens from south of the border.

71% plus of all apprehended cars stolen in 2005 in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California were stolen by Illegal aliens or “transport coyotes".

47% of cited/stopped drivers in California have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 47%, 92% are illegal aliens.

Just heard on the news today, around noon time, that the messiah has granted asylum to his aunt,
from Kenya,
who has been living in the U.S. illegally.

However, I was wrong in the fact that it was some court that granted her asylum.

Heavily accented teachers removed from Arizona classrooms

School districts in Arizona are under orders from the state's Department of Education to remove from classrooms teachers who speak English with a very heavy accent or whose speech is ungrammatical.

Officials say they want students who don’t know much English to have teachers who can best model how to speak the language, but, according to The Wall Street Journal, some principals and administrators are concerned that the standards for removal are arbitrary.

The recent move by the department comes during the political firestorm over a new law in Arizona which requires police to question anyone who appears to be in the country illegally. It is the most restrictive immigration law in the country.

Arizona's education department has sent people into schools to audit teachers on comprehensible pronunciation, correct grammar and good writing. Teachers who fail may try to improve, but if they don’t, school districts can fire or reassign them.

The Journal’s report says that critics of the new teachers policy believe the education department was encouraged by the new law, and that targeting teachers with heavy accents is just part of the anti-immigration movement in Arizona.

School officials say that is nonsense, and that kids should have teachers who they understand.

About 150,000 of Arizona’s 1.2 million public school students are classified as English Language Learners, the Journal said.

Nobody can argue that kids don’t deserve teachers whom they can easily understand, and teachers who use proper grammar. I’ve been in classrooms where I couldn’t understand a teacher, and in classrooms where a teacher’s grammar made me wince.

The issue here is how to determine which teachers really should be in the classroom and which ones shouldn’t be. Speech that one child can’t understand could be completely comprehensible to most of the students.

How does one fairly draw the line on grammatical mistakes? Hardly anyone speaks English perfectly according to the rules of grammar. Quick: Give me an example of the pluperfect and the future subjunctive. Is it enough to toss out a teacher because he or she routinely misuses the verb "to be?"

I lived in Spain and worked in Mexico. Everyone wanted to learn from a native speaker. In Spain, they also discriminated between British English and American English. I've met English teachers in Mexico who were unintelligible to me. The law / change could have been better presented if it had required a comprehensive English proficiency test of all teachers.
The GOV of Sonora state is pissed of at Az. They're being flooded by Mexican nationals who have no money or jobs. They say that the U.S. should take care of the indigent Mexican nationals rather than Mexico.

that is amazing, but not surprising, that, Mexico, would not want the illegals that are here, back (home), where they have to provide for them........

I've had a lot of teachers over the years who don't speak English, including English teachers! Do you want to know what they all had in common? Lazy white people. Yep, every one was white!! When I have first generation Chinese teachers their English is perfect. First generation Mexican, German... They speak English. Some 22 year old white girl with a BA in romance literature? She can't stop saying "like" every other word and is unintelligible over the chewing gum snapping in her mouth all the way through lecture. The problem is the lack of qualified teachers, not highly motivated immigrants. This country was founded on immigrants! If people want to come here and contribute, let them! Remember everyone that America has plenty of jobs but most of them suck! All the picky, middle class, moderately educated people don't want shitty jobs..... immigrants can't be as picky because compared to where they are coming from this is still the land of opportunity!

Now, I bet that if you went down to a "local Mexican religious community center" almost anywhere in the United States and listened to a service, it would be in Spanish, but if you stayed around for a while and waited for the free English language lessons (usually offered a few times each week and always at strange hours so working parents can participate) they will be full, packed to the gills with people standing in every corner. That's how it is where I'm from anyway.

The problem isn't lack of motivation, it's usually lack of opportunity or knowledge that the opportunity even exists!

I work with PhD engineers who have heavy accents. God forbid that these people teach children. Stick to designing spacecraft and developing vaccines.

True... As I get deeper into my education I seem to have more and more trouble communicating with my instructors, TAs, or classmates on anything but Geology. They speak science but not always English. ;-)

Still, I stick to my claim that all my worst English teachers were native English speakers. I don't care about an accent... accents don't matter. I do care if they have command of the language. I do care if they can make clear and coherent arguments.

I agree completely. That's why I said that they should have a comprehensive English proficiency test for all teachers,,, not all hispanic teachers.

Mexico opens California office to provide ID for illegals

well this is news to me, Catalina Island seems to be a huge crack where illegals are pour in at an alarming rate (first I've heard of it), so much so they are putting a consult there to provide them with ID's.

my friend says they just hop on the ferry and head back to the mainland. The ferry people haven't said anything because it a huge moneymaker for them. I would have thought that the huge drug smuggling operation would have halted that loophole with a quickness, especially on such a small island, but Drug Cartels have bought large oceanfront properties there, and are allowed to do as they please, by local police.

I suspect that as unemployment rises, anti-immigrant sentiment will rise with it.
