Off shore oil rigs
I remember, living in Texas, the joy of going to a beach for the first time, Since I moved their from So. Cal. Only to walk out of that water, in Galveston, with sticky black tar-like shit stuck to my legs. So drilling in our most sensetive areas, are our only option, until we standardize Green energy? I'm just curious how far ahead we'd be if that were a priority in 2000.

One of the first thing St. Ronald did after moving into the White House was to get rid of the defeatist solar panels that Mr. Carter had put up. We lost 30 years of possible research.

We on the east coast are fighting hard to reinstate the Off Shore Drilling Ban! We are waiting to see what happens when this oil moves into the Atlantic. If A spill of any size moves into our estuaries, it would destroy our houseshoe crabs and in return would mean the end of many species including the Red Knot.
I work to end all off shore drilling! You should too!

Too late? Yes, but we've been trying to stop this shit for a while now. Only, half our country has had their heads up their ass for a good while.DVD Burner wrote:It's really kinda too late to be thinking about stopping all of these things.
Trust me, it's all already fucked up.

So far as I know, this is just rumor. I'm only posting it so someone with more time can follow up.

That being said, this is by far gonna be the scariest shit ever if these guys are correct.
And most likely they are or Ratigan would NOT have them on his show.
Dude, this is really fucked up.

The 70s were a rough decade and to really deal with the problems that were beginning to make themselves known would have taken a real call to, well "service" is the best word I can find right now, and so we decided to collectively stick our heads in the sand.TomServo wrote:When Raygun took office, I was 9? And, even at that age, developing clean energy would have made sense to me. So why do older generations not get it? They're supposed to be wiser!

I don't understand all this tearing of the cloth by everyone who chooses to point fingers at BP.
I just don't.
Unless anyone here casting stones is completely independent of using fossil fuels (ie totally off the grid) then the bottom line seems to me is that we're all culpable.

It still takes oil to lubricate electric motors, bearings, etc in green vehicles, petroleum products will be near impossible to avoid for the indefinite future. If you can make green energy without using one drop of oil, then why in the hell are you sitting online ranting and raving when your money printing press is calling....
Bottom line for me is "shit happens". BP was stupid, they ignored their engineers and their stupidity killed those engineers and other good men and fucked things up. But BP is just one company among several working over 2500 deep wells in the gulf, wells that have produced billions of gallons of oil safely without fuss for years. Let the scientists and engineers learn from this fuck up, build better gear and safety mechanisms and then "Drill Baby Drill". Besides we know less about the deep sea than we do space. Learning how to safely operate equipment at depth may have benefits for us all just like the space program did. Science and engineering will prevail. We just gotta have faith...and a little less gubbermint red tape.

Enlighten me. Show me a world where petrochemicals can be completely done away with. I suppose you'll suggest we go back to using whale oil or something...in any case I look forward to being schooled and by anyone that wants to "teach".

...can we both grow enough to burn and to eat? If so now, for how long in the future?

Bio diesel can be made drom algae. Is a guy in New Mexico, who does this. Would require an area 1/10th the size of that state, for production....to fuel the entire country.
Don't know much about engines that run on Bio diesel, but actual Diesel engines last 3 times as long as a gas engine. Got 658,000 miles on my Peterbilt.

Bio Fuel is one thing...algae is definitely an exciting alternative...what I was referring to is heavy grease and various lubricants, etc. That's what I have yet to see replaced.
A word of warning...anyone that suggests anything to do with corn is going to get an earful, pun fully intended. I live in corn country and the water table is taking serious hits every growing season...according to the latest extension survey and info from the Dept of Environmental Quality we're talking a 30+ foot drop in the underground reservoir....and it's not going to get better. From one perspective center point pivot companies like Zimmatic, T-L, and Reinke have contributed as much to the decimation of the environment as the companies leveling mountain tops for coal in West Virginia.
Back on topic...let's touch on the refining process and the products produced.

Now...green kerosene? I'm from Missouri. SHOW ME!
Edit: Water drop for the county I'm in was bumped from 20 to 30 feet...another survey I have in hard copy states 40+ ft..

You forgot Valley pivots Kenetic V. The best damn pivots in the world!!!! I used to be able to diagnose a safetied out valley at a glance and always carried a micro switch allen wrench in my wallet. The farm I worked on pumped 9 million gallons of water a day on days that were 95 degrees + and our aquifer stayed in a constant 2 foot range year after year. USGS had a data logger in an unused well on the property .. pretty neat to see that tight graph. That aquifer is the exception to most.
Demand is the side of the equation that needs to be worked on by consumers. Conservation and efficiency needs to be addressed there and in law.

At least in Nebraska there's an interest in measuring the ground water levels. Head into Missouri and the only thing large well water users have to do is "self-report" their estimated usage. Think of the fox guarding the chicken house here.
