Internet at buringman?

Post by ClockworkWellington » Wed Jun 02, 2010 2:26 pm

Sadly I have a job that won't let me be without internet access for a whole week. However I would only have to check it probably once or twice a day.

Yes I know it sucks, but this is the only way I can go to burning man :(

Anyone know a good way to rent a satellite for internet for the week?

This has been discussed extensively... used to be a sticky thread on it. Try the search function (which sucks, but well).

Stop by the Olympic sized swimming pool on the way in for a quick dip.

By Thursday they are far too busy to miss him at all. And they won't squeeze you into their schedule either.

There is WiFi near center camp and by the DPW depot. During the event it can be tough to get any bandwidth. Usually it's usable in the wee hours of the morning but generally unreliable.

You can also jump the Gerlach bus daily for a nominal fee and hook into the WiFi at the BM office in town.

Then there is cell service which is usually hit or miss and the data rates are horrid.

Good Luck

First I want to thank everyone for not making snide comments about having to work at Burning Man. I do feel bit embarrassed by even asking about this.

The horrid date rates don't bother me. I just need to have it be reliable. And going into town every day doesn't seem like it would work.

IF you need internet you maybe working at the wee hours of the morning. I hear thats the only time you can regularly get service. I'm sorry you'll have to work on the Playa. I told my job I was going camping in the desert and to spread ashes (not a complete lie) so my phone may not work and even if it does I am not to be called. My cell phone will either stay at home or in the car. I'm still debating which because I don't know how hot your phone can get before it stops working. But I also know that I may need one in case something happens on route to BRC.

Anyways, I'm off topic. Good luck.

Our phones have always done okay in the car. You'll want it while traveling in case of an emergency. If you're worried about the heat, get a small insulated lunchbox, the mini-cooler kind. Don't chill it or anything, leave it dry, just keep your phone in it. Works with medications, batteries and small electronics of all kinds.

If it's something you really need throughout the week then I'd probably rent a satphone or something that you could tether to your laptop. I was able to send text messages at 4am and that's about it, lol.

People have used HAM radios to get phone/internet service but I have no idea how to do that.

Iphone tethered to a laptop would give you internet anywhere I think.

Cant tether an iPhone without jail breaking and hacking it. Illegal.

Plus the AT&T network sucks big time and has horrid coverage.

Well, it's not illegal, just voids the warranty. I believe they're going to allow tethering soon anyway for a nice fee, lol. That all assumes you can get a cell connection which I seriously doubt you'll be able to, at least not a reliable one.

Oh it is fellony illegal. Apple could nail you for the phone hacking and AT&T can get you for theft. Just because they have not prosecuted anyone doesn't mean there is no risk. Do as you please but be informed.

Possibly this-
Have work rent you an internet ready sat-phone since they need for you to be available. Have your tech guy do it and make sure it all works before you head out. If you get an unlimited plan it would allow you to gift a bit of contact for people who really need to be in touch.

In 6 years at burning man my different cell phones (trapped in the glove box of my incredibly hot vehicle) have not had any permanent issues develop. I did have to cool down the touch screen on my iPhone to use once as I prepared for exodus by charging it.

When you say you need "internet access"...what precisely do yuo need?

To send and retrieve email from a laptop periodically? Hourly?

To have a mobile device that sends/recieves such stuff from satellite in realtime?

To have a laptop that is connected to some service that will allow you sufficient bandwidth to connect back to your home office and do support work?

Do you need voice access? I.e. depending on what you find on your "Internet access" that you need, might something then require that you call them?

These are all have different solutions. Can you outline a bit more clearly what you REQUIRE...not what would be nice, etc.

Huh, must be a USA thing??? I have a 2nd gen iPhone, and after the last firmware update the "tether me" option just showed up (I'm on Rogers). I have never needed it, but its nice to know I have it for an "emergency".

As far as coverage goes, um... I wouldn't count on it.

Last year Fusion Valley had Internet access as part of their Theme Camp. It was on "B" about 3:15.

It's a US thing, as soon as you get about 2 miles outside of Sweetgrass, it will change from Rogers to AT&T.

I realize my phone service will be on AT&T, it is the tethering I was surprised about...

Where is Sweetgrass?? I usually first travel through Montana while heading down.

I was misunderstanding the "tethering" part! My bad!
Sweetgrass MT/Coutts AB is usually where we come through from Saskatoon. First MT stop before Shelby. Oh and duty free at that crossing has a crappy alcohol selection. They have no beer or Smirnoff or the like anymore (miss my Smirnoff's made with actual vodka!)...just hard stuff and just so ya know the hard stuff is cheaper in Nevada than it is at duty free.

Sorry for the thread drift  If you want reliable wifi, you may just have to take a trip into Fernley one day.

No Problem!!! :)

I usually go through the Climax crossing myself into Montana, all I can find at the duty-free is dry grass...

I guess if work will pay for the Sat NET it would be fine. There are a few options out there (google is an option). I checked into it last year and the actual rental was pretty reasonable, it was the cost per MB that scared me away.
