California GOP gubernatorial candidates Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner on Friday backed away from their party's "drill, baby, drill" mantra in the wake of the devastating BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which is now considered to be the worst oil-related disaster in American history.
As President Obama visited the gulf region to respond to criticism about his administration's response to the spill, Whitman and Poizner said in separate appearances on the Peninsula that they have modified their views on offshore drilling in California as a result of the spill, which has gushed 18 million to nearly 40 million gallons, according to government estimates.
Speaking to reporters after an appearance before supporters at a Redwood City cement plant, Whitman distanced herself from former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's "drill, baby, drill" position. Whitman said she "would actually be on a different side of that issue" from Palin.
Whitman said she has "historically been against oil drilling," saying she would support drilling off California only if technology were developed to assure that the risk of accidents such as the one in the gulf would be very low.
Supported drilling
Two years ago, as an adviser to GOP presidential candidate John McCain, Whitman delivered a rousing speech from the floor of the Republican National Convention in Minnesota lauding the Arizona senator for supporting "the right energy policies ... (including) lifting the ban on offshore oil drilling."
Poizner, the state insurance commissioner, told reporters before a town hall meeting Friday in San Carlos that while "drill, baby, drill" is "not the way I'd put it," he supports offshore oil drilling to meet the state's energy needs and lower dependence on imported oil.
"We have to continue with offshore oil drilling in a safe way," he said, but cautioned that such drilling should be done "off existing platforms - we don't need new platforms - using advanced, safe, modern slant-drilling technology.
"We have to be calm about this and not overreact," Poizner said, referring to the gulf disaster. He added that California's offshore oil wells are 1,200 feet under the sea surface rather than a mile deep, as in Louisiana.
With little more than a week until the June 8 primary election, the GOP candidates' views on offshore oil drilling are expected to be scrutinized closely. This weekend, a new Los Angeles Times/USC poll will show that a majority of California voters oppose offshore drilling.
While the GOP candidates are modifying their positions on drilling, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown has consistently opposed offshore oil drilling.
Climate change bill
On Friday, the Republican candidates also reiterated that if elected they would suspend the state's landmark climate change bill, AB32.
Whitman said the law "will not create as many green jobs (in California) as it will force out." She said she would place a moratorium on new business regulations and call for a reconsideration of environmental regulations that "are taking the place of the needs of jobs and people."
Poizner called AB32 "draconian" and predicted it "will crush our economy and hurt the environment."
In another development, new campaign spending reports in the governor's race showed widening gaps in spending in the last furious days before the primary.
Whitman, who has put a record-breaking $68 million of her own money into the race, has burned through $33 million in the last eight weeks - a rate of more than $500,000 a day.
She has about $3 million in the bank, while Brown has $20 million in the bank and spent just $249,000 in the last reporting period, the reports showed.
Poizner, who has put about $24 million into the race, spent $17.3 million in the period and has about $3 million in the bank, according to the reports.

US Admits Fault in Drone Attack that Killed 23 Afghans

The U.S. military has acknowledged that operators of a remote-controlled drone aircraft are to blame for the deaths of 23 civilians in an attack in Afghanistan earlier this year.
U.S. troops fired missiles and rockets at the civilians' vehicles in Uruzgan province after mistaking them for a convoy of Taliban insurgents.
The military's investigative report into the February 21 incident says the crew operating the drone provided "inaccurate" reporting and ignored or downplayed information that civilians were in the convoy.
The report, released Saturday, describes the command posts as "poorly functioning" and says they failed to provide the ground force commander with evidence and analysis that the vehicles were not a hostile threat.
The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, said inadvertently killing or injuring civilians is "heartbreaking." He said the U.S. will do all it can to regain the trust of the Afghan people.
The military statement said General McChrystal officially reprimanded four senior and two junior officers after reviewing the investigation.
The report cited shortcomings in training, communication and decision-making and offered recommendations to prevent future incidents.
Separately, the Afghan Interior Ministry said a suicide bomber detonated himself Saturday in Kabul, but caused no other casualties.
The explosion took place close to a supermarket run by Supreme Food Services, the main food supplier to foreign forces in the country. The store is located near the main road used by NATO convoys traveling in and out of the capital.

Well, not to change the subject from obummer but, there is a new attitude about Ron Paul. More and more commentators are referring to him as a "lightning rod"
This was the same reference used for Ross Perot and La Rouche.
The claim is made that he attracts and patronizes all the disaffected. Then, when he gets them all lined up with his agenda,,, he just lets all the energy and momentum. dissipate. He wouldn't touch 9 / 11. Glen Beck was going to have a great expose about the "camps" with Paul. But, a bit later, they both agreed that there was no basis in fact.
He got everyone all fired up about auditing the FED. Then he could easily hide behind the gutting of the bill and say that he had tried.
He got everyone excited about his run for presidency. Then, he just frittered it away.
Now, Rand Paul is worrying a lot of people.
I don't know one way or another. Maybe Paul is sincere but , used as a tool to deflect and dissipate any attacks on the status quo. He seems to pick his targets carefully. Possibly, a "loose cannon" with only a few degrees of latitude??
