LEO flash mob?

Postby bm_cricket » Wed Jun 09, 2010 9:46 am

Somehow I got to thinking... What would the response be to a flash mob of.. LEOs...

If there were 2 or 3 people in uniform.. I figured that would be a likely reaction.. that and a lot of profanity..

But if there were 20 or 30 in full matching uniform... Then what?

I totaly read this differently. I was thinking; When the LEO's roll out to harass the populous, that we flash mob them and "entertain them" so they forget to be bungholes. jus sayin.

Ha ha, I LOVE it.

I've done it on a smaller scale. Just dress like a cop and stand around...it pisses some people off.

Well, most people.

Except awesome people. We laugh and laugh.

It is illegal, though, so it'd need to be some sort of mob thing, I'd think, so's not to get in trouble with actual LEO.

I know it's.. pretty illegal to impersonate a cop but 30 or 40 people walking around with little pads of paper handing out fake tickets would not look real. My experience with LEOs at the event has mostly been positive... They don't usually mess with you unless you are being stupid and blatantly braking major laws in public. This is a major law but as an art performance I doubt it would get anybody in trouble.

Yeah.. it is very much against the law to stand around and impersonate a cop.. but I think a mob would probably get away with it.. Everyone just needs to realize that they are walking a fine line between comedy and felony.

I also agree that it would be fine but what happens when someone breaks off of the mob and starts trying to use his "authority" to get favors from the rave kids out there. If i were a cop at burning man and saw a mob of 30-40 obviously fake cops, i and 5 of my buddies would have a very close eye on you guys.

It's only a potential crime if a reasonable person would mistake you for a LEO.

What about the top half being LEO, and the bottom half being your choice of {Borat, shirtcocker, showgirl, gorilla, whatever}?

Interesting question. When cops are undercover, what constitutes impersonating an officer? You could put on a smokey-the-bear hat, cop sunglasses, a big heavy belt and maybe a bogus badge on your playa-wear and walk around with a big fat book like a ticket book giving out tickets for playa fouls. Mooping, driving too fast, whatever. Imagine them showing a photo of you like that in court trying to convince the judge you were impersonating an officer.

Of course, you might miss the burn while chilling as a guest of the state awaiting your chance to discuss this with the judge, but good art is risky, right? (or is Risky art?) (I'm not even going to go into the permutations available adding in Risque. Or Art as a name).

What fun would that be?

The more realistic, the better to freak people out with.

I was playing around with both options. Full costume vs. some major missing gear. (mostly no pants). I like both options but I hadn't considered if we all have the same top half and we all have variations on the bottom half. That would surely keep us out of trouble and it would be even more bizarre!

Of course...

So. If we do it toward the end of the week I would shave my beard to make a proper mustache. How does Saturday or Sunday sound? Anyone else interested?

Hat, sun glasses, shirt, and belt are integral. All the rest is optional. Deal?

Sunday sounds brilliant. What time? Are there any other major day-time events on Sunday? Things that are likely to conflict with us?

Does anyone feel like posting this to other interesting and related forums? Maybe tribe or the like?

Don't underestimate your friendly neighborhood LEO. Quite a lot of them have been attending for years, and many of them specifically request working the Burn. They're out there because they want to be, and from my conversations with bunches of them during the Piss Clear years, they enjoy the hell out of the event. You'll probably be surprised at how they'll react, especially if it's performance art.

I agree. There are some hyperactive new cops sometimes but most are cool and most enjoy the job. And yes, most of them volunteer for it. But even so, if you provoke them they will bite.
