Playa building census

Post by bm_cricket » Tue Jun 08, 2010 9:55 am

I'm working on a little project.. Oh god, the things we do when we aren't actually on the playa. Day dreaming... Ooooh...

Okay, here's my plan. I want to build a web site that shows designs, photographs, and bios (of builders and structures). I think it would spur some more creativity in structure design. I like my dome. I like Hex-a-yurts but I want to know how you made it and how you like it. I think a lot of people could make use of this info. And maybe some people would learn from it and make something new.

So, here's what I want from you! Fill out this simple one page form (If you don't want to share your email address, just leave that part blank. But I do plan to share everything else on this form!), then email it back to me. Please include a photo of the structure and, if you really want to be cool, a little design information!!

I will use all this information to create a web site showing all the design info you want to share, a photo of the structure, and what ever information you give me about it. When I've got it built I'll share it here.

Tips on the PDF, please save it to someplace on your computer you can find! Desktop? Documents folder? Both are fine. Then, when you are done in Adobe Acrobat, save it. Close Adobe Acrobat. Open it back up and check that it's saved your answers properly. Then you can email it to the address in the PDF.

Prototype website!
....I needed a distraction from studying genetics and DNA replication... Oh god finals week...

Sooo, I decided that rather than build a static website on my own web-host I would use a wiki. This will let anyone update however they want to. Personally, I think my questionnaire is good and offers a fairly standard set of questions that most would-be structure builders would want to know.

I'll still gladly make the updates if someone wants to send me their files! :-)

Love this idea Cricket. Camp mates and I have done a simple pvc arch design shade structure for the last couple years and are looking to upgrade to something that's bigger and might actually shade our tents and protect us in storms.

If you know anyone that's done scaffolding incorporated structures, I'd be especially interested.

Prototype looks dope! Keep up the good work.

Thank you. I'm trying to make a good starting point for people wanting to see what has been done before, how to make it better, and what simply sucks... Personally, I've only worked with domes, Costco barns, and regular-old-crappy-tents on the playa. I wanted to avoid PVC because it doesn't last very long. I'm working on the PVC section right now and the comments I'm getting from builders with PVC says that the material is great at first (light weight, flexible...) but it only lasts for a few seasons before it starts to warp or crack. What I really want is advice/comments on people who have done tensile structures. I have no experience with that but I know that a lot of the nicest big structures are made with that technology. (Center camp for example)

Image BTW, what's your name from?

I'm also interested in learning a bit ore about muti story tower Ideas, and with the Met theme I know we'll see alot of them this year. I'll post our Structure pics when we put it up next week.
Thanks Cricket. (BTW, I'm a Bio-Chem Student too, and yeah Sequencing ...Loads of fun )

Yeah our PVC was good for the last couple years but we're definitely looking to upgrade.

If you could post your experience that would be great.

I've seen large domes with large lofts inside!! I don't remember the designers name or contact information but it was freaking cool! I'll try to work on those multi-story structures if I can find good examples.

I'm actually a Geology student but my program requires a year of Bio (it gives us a little more perspective when working with environmental stuff)...

Hm.. Cool suggestion on the tensile structures. I'm hoping to find something more playa-specific but that may be a good link to include for general information...
