Canada hats, flags, themes... question ???

Post by thefreshmaker » Thu Jun 10, 2010 11:20 pm

Hey,

I'm from Edmonton Alberta Canada. I'm going to the burn for the first time. When I was in europe, the trick was to wear some kind of Canada flag. That way people would come up and talk to you. Now I didn't do that. But when I saw others that did I would go up and talk to them.

So for the burn I bought a few interesting Canada hats. So I'm wondering if that might have the same effect? Other Canadians see you and want to say hi? Or perhaps others from other countries who maybe just want to talk to Canadians might do the same.

Is this a good idea to meet others? Just curious.

I think a Crosby jersey with an oversized faux Olympic gold medal around you neck would be much better.

it could also make you a target for roaming bands of vandals.......they spray Canadians with whipped cream and wrap them in oversize crepes, trying to turn them French........

I'd just go and not make a big deal of being from Canada. Didn't South Park clue you in?

There is a long standing tradition of "catch and release" for Canadians at Burning Man.

Once caught, they should be weighed, measured, tagged and released back into the wild. If innoculation of the specimen is needed, the BRC Animal Control has a protocol and facilites. Capture logs should be submitted daily.

It's all documented right here:

Burning Man 1999 panorama by Brad Templeton.

Note hockey rink (aka Canadian Sacred Circle) at left. The Molson was flowing that year.

Just turn to the person walking next to you...chances are 8 to 10 they're Canadian.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

This is proven by the facts that I'm not Canadian and I don't walk.

In 07 I camped with a Canadian and we flew both flags. We attracted lots of canucks.
It's going to be alright.

Canada flag

Post by professorzed » Sun Jun 13, 2010 4:19 pm

Hi, I am from Canada too. I also haven't been to Burning Man yet. I wanted to go last year, but never made it.

In preparation for last year, I sewed or attached a Canadian flag or maple leaf on every piece of equipment that I was bringing. My reason for doing this wasn't so much to brag about my nationality, as it was to identify my belongings. I figure if I lost something, there would be a better chance of it being returned to me if it had my name, home address, and camping address on it, with a distinctive look to it.

So yes, I would put a Canadian flag or maple leaf on everything you own, along with your name, home address, camp address, etc. Put some Edmonton Oilers badges on your bags, hats and clothes, too. Add a Panda, Penguin, or a Llama too, or whatever you like. Make it look unique and not 'store bought', so no one else could mistaken it as their own.

Can we have a Great Canadian Gear Swap? All Canadians with maple leaves on their gear can switch with other Canadians with maple leaves on their gear.
eh?

Nothing makes one look more like an ogling, spectating tourist than slapping a flag patch on your Camelbak and schlepping around the playa with a Lonely Planet travel guide.

You might get approached by a few people. But really, the people out wandering the playa who get the most attention by far are those who don impressive and imaginative costumes. I imagine it can be too much attention at times. It seems some of them can scarcely walk ten feet without someone stopping them and asking to take a picture.
