One Item for BM a Day (2010-2012)
That's all I need, though. Make some coffee for me in the morning, maybe heat up water if I bought a dehydrated meal, or took something that would taste better heated.Bling wrote:Well, it's certainly SMALL, but it doesn't look all that useful to me--except for heating up things in a cup. We're looking at a 2-burner one (since, of course we sold the old 2-burner Coleman stove at a garage sale a few years ago...): http://www.campchef.com/store/item/413/ ... combo.html. (Cheaper on Amazon).
I don't cook meals or feed more than just me.

Nothing personal but.. Scholarship tickets+$150 stoves=weirdnessC.f.M. wrote:I'm avoiding posting around here, until I find out if I'm freaking going...still waiting to hear about the scholarship. /sigh
Am considering purchasing a Jetboil stove, if anybody has thoughts on it (see link).
Those shade structures look tight.
2008 I was unemployed, between school, and broke.. I asked for and got a scholarship ticket.
2009 I was unemployed, between school, and mostly broke... I purchased a regular ticket.
This year I'm unemployed, between school, totally flat broke with medical expenses,... and the ticket found me.
The one thing that all these years have in common is no ultra-portable $150 backpacking-in-the-alps style camping stoves...
It was better next year. -Burners
Hi all....just wanted to share. Found some cheap blinky LED sticks at Dollar Tree today. Never have seen ones like em before. Battery operated, there are several LED lights that strobe four different colors, encased in a 18"ish foam tube (kinda like the ones you bop each other with at the pool). They come wrapped in a hideous "decorative" plastic but if you take that off they're pretty cool and very light. They're also easy to cannibalize for the lights. And they're cheap. and blinky...
I didn't apply for a scholarship ticket. I didn't even think about going (last year was financially disastrous for me). Someone gifted me a ticket this year. Now, I'm doing what I can to get the money together to go which has included, among other things, applying for a non-BORG "scholarship" contest that's giving money to help with travel.bm_cricket wrote:Nothing personal but.. The blog is about camping miscellania (I don't think there's anything I've posted, that I've actually bought - except the pee funnel last year). I don't plan to buy one of those stoves anytime soon. Just seeing what's out there.

((((((((((((C.f.M.))))))))))))) really, really, REALLY hoping you make it this year. For you, and for us!!! ;-)...tissue?
You don't have to be skinny, naked and under 30 to be a Hottie!
C.f.M... you darling gearhead you. $100 bucks for a stove that is designed to mainly boil water. They do make a french press lid for the jetboil! Are you a backpacker? are you coming with just a suitcase? cost for size and weight savings... still need to get the gas cannister. Sierra trading post had some for a while, with coupons on retailmenot for 20% off.C.f.M. wrote:I'm avoiding posting around here, until I find out if I'm freaking going...still waiting to hear about the scholarship. /sigh

but here's an idea that works pretty well and is cheap. get one of those plastic mesh filters they have merchandised near the coffee at the market, around 2-4 bucks. in a pot of hot water it makes a nice coffee. just sort of swim it around a bit and make sure your nice coffee grounds do not spill out. if some do, decant back through the filter.
alright, dont' get me started on camp coffee, don't ack so many methods, so many stoves...

Here is the website - http://www.theblacksmithshop.com/playastaples.html
Used them last years for my tent and wanted extras to stake down our shade structure this year.

You can actually get some of those Jet burner stoves from the army surplus stores. They have the fancy brands like the ones at REI, but they only save you a bit of money, so you'll still pay $70 bucks for the really small one (thats a little bigger than a D size batter, and folds open)C.f.M. wrote:The blog is about camping miscellania (I don't think there's anything I've posted, that I've actually bought - except the pee funnel last year). But if you're willing to get a bigger one they have some that $20 bucks but not so great for back packing.
The whole top part is solid, with a plastic base just to hold the propane tank up right
I'm picking up of the these $20 ones this weekend for the same reason you're thinking of getting one. Cause using the old white gas Coleman, is kinda a pain in the ass, if you just wanna heat some water for an MRE, or heat up some soup.

I inherited the big 3 burner on the right from my dad. The damn thing is indestructible! You can even use unleaded 85 octane gasoline (its so old on the original box it said 'unleaded only')in it, though we've never tried it. We also find that there work better at high altitude than some other canned gas type stoves. Its great for cooking a meal, but a pain in the ass if you just wanna boil two cups of water.
Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole

That Coleman one there on the bottom is what my friend brings, I don't really need that much fuel - and she cooks with pots and stuff on it.
I will really only be making coffee, which is why the boil water/make coffee/drink it 3-in-1 seemed neat. My original plan was one of the more expensive, smaller ones like you picture above the Coleman (I have a year-old gift card to a sports store, that would make the price reasonabler).
Eh, I think I'll just stick to setting up next to a coffee camp.

agreed. why go to the trouble of the stove & fuel if all you want is coffee? There is ALWAYS plenty of coffee around the playa. Heck, stop on by Metro Mart. I'm usually up making a pot by 7:00. I might even toss ya a pancake or two.C.f.M. wrote:That Coleman one there on the bottom is what my friend brings, I don't really need that much fuel - and she cooks with pots and stuff on it.
