I used goggles and an old scarf that I had for most of the sand storms. It wasnt so much hard on the lungs (I did have a hack for a few weeks but that was more likely contributed to all the smoking that was hadEmilyD wrote:LostinReno can you elaborate on this...I was planning on using a scarf for the dust storms. I've lived here almost my entire life so it wasn't a "getting used to the climate" thing. I also put lotion/sunscreen on everyday. It just trashed my poor cheeks.

The ones on my face had the wind burn, the one's on my ass suffered from the bike. On that note Otter Pops didn't relieve the face pain.

Re: Leaving Burning Man before the Burn
I think it's your experience and your ticket, so as long as you don't create a problem for somebody else as you leave, there's no right or wrong about it.flatlander13 wrote:What do you think about leaving Burning Man before the Burn?
I think that you're not alone in that, and that's a good thing. If the same experiences resonated for all 40,000 participants, what would that mean? That we had 40,000 people who thought exactly alike. How dull would that be?I find that the actual burning of the Man on Saturday has no meaning for me
When in doubt, hit the ignore key. You'll seldom miss anything worth reading, and your blood pressure will thank you.

Coming out of a dust storm that delayed it for hours, the Man Burn was pretty good. Best fireworks I've seen. Long.
But the Temple Burn... The quiet, with vague wailing in the background and all the hippies drumming. And the big, white smoke tornadoes. Spectacular. And it meant a lot to me. I'll not leave early. While I also prefer the feeling of the early week, I can deal with the crowds and assholes later.
Oh, and maybe it was that so many left early, but the exodus Monday early afternoon was only about 1 1/2 hours. Of course, I only live 200 miles away. Think I'll do the same this year, maybe spending a night at Eagles Nest or Summer Lake.

I'll probably leave not long after the Temple burn. I can cross a lot of desert at night. Plus with a 14 hour drive I want to get home with plenty of time to unpack, clean up, get some sleep...before I go back to school on Tuesday. If I wait till noon on Monday I will probably get home late at night and have to do those things with hardly any time to do them.
We always stay until the Tues after. There is zero traffic and it's a nice, relaxed tear down of camp. Of course, this year we're going in early, so staying until Tuesday might be overdoing it. I guess we'll see. :D
I will say, like others have stated, I really like the early/mid part of the week better than Burn weekend. It feels more like a friendly city community. The last weekend feels like Spring Break with more frenzied, weekend party-ers.

I'm in the same boat as bigbluedoggy and CapSmashy what with the building and breaking down the esplanade theme camp... when we leave on Tuesday we have been in the desert for 2 weeks and are really ready to go home, yet still kinda don't want to leave...
This is my 8th consecutive burn and I have never left before its over. I've sure as hell slept through the burns, watching bundled up in a lounge chair in front of camp, more than once, and that's just fine. I love the end of the week not for the burn, but for the otherworldliness of what's left behind. Being able to cook up all of our leftover food and share everything we have left with the neighbors we didn't meet all week. BRC turns into this refugee-like ghost town, and everyone, including us, is just spent and raw and real and grateful for whatever kindness there is out there. This is when the real giving and receiving and community happens for me. That's why I don't want to leave before the burn. I don't want to miss that, I could give a shit about fire.

This is my third burn and I've never stayed past Sunday morning. My campmates put this in my head that there was no need to stay for the temple burn and it would be "hell" to stay past then. Well this year I am staying and want it all. Coming in on Thursday the 26th and leaving on Tuesday the 7th. This event has become so ingrained in me that I don"t want to miss a single thing. So if you're looking for kindred souls to wind down with, look for me at D and 7:30. Dr Helix, at your service..

while never having had early entrance i will try a do so next year, with greeters, i usually leave sunday before the temple burn. I have only one temple burn under my belt, but it was needed. If i have not lost anyone, or need a dramatic life changer i leave on sunday. the temple burn is intense and amazing but i prefer to go there if needed not just because. I am not saying don't temple burn at all, its just so intense that I don't need to experience it every year. so far this year i don't think i need it , but who knows what will happen between now and then. as far as the sat burn it well meh. kinda cool, but definately not my fav part of the week. I absolutely love from midnight sunday until about thurs night. then I just go to the spots i have found earlier in the week that are small and intimate. i do like the great djs over the weekend, and have fun, but usually am off to the side getting my groove on with a bottle. oh and i love the conclave burn night, that is the best part of the actual burn!! i hate saying goodbye, and tend to pack up and get the fuck out by sun. around 9 am.

I do have to say that the man burn was the most impressive one since the big pyramid burn in 03.

Re: Leaving Burning Man before the Burn
I think that is totally cool! Many people should not have to feel that they are doing something wrong if they want to leave before the weekend for any reason. Sure, I feel bad that you are because I want to party with you when the man burns!flatlander13 wrote:What do you think about leaving Burning Man before the Burn?
I find that the actual burning of the Man on Saturday has no meaning for me…….this was my 5th burn.
After 10 days on the playa this year I and my campmates left Saturday afternoon before the burn.
What do you think?
But I'm sure I did so earlier in the week and hope to do so the next time.
Hey, It's all cool!
