Pearly Wisdom for Virgin Burners;

Post by brigitami » Mon Jun 14, 2010 10:26 pm

It wasn't as scary as I thought it was going to be.
I almost chickened out 3 weeks before.
I'm so glad i didn't. Burning Man changed my life a hundred times to wonderful...

Something that got me there in the end was This List which i lamenated and kept in a backpack by the door. And I knew that, no matter how much of the shit that i had planned that wasn't going to be finished in time, I could just get up and Go!

Because as long as you have the items on This List in a bag, attached to your person, you will be prepared for anything the playa throws at you.

(Oh, and it gets a lot colder at night than you can imagine, ALWAYS carry a coat!.....and pick up after yourself, for playa sake!)

The List
trash bag
sunglasses
goggles
eyedrops
xtra contacts

socks
cup

1st aid of bandaids & ibuprofen

water spritz
moist towellette
mints

camera
lotion (spf)
lip balm

headlamp
xtra batteries
glowees for visibility

respirator/dust mask
scarf

tp
condom
tampon

(added after my first year):
sharpie
duct tape
scissors
rope
mylar strips

With your moist towlettes, spritzer bottle, lotion and condoms you should be able to produce water on your own if applied properly.

I tie them (tight) to people's guy wires or tent lines so nobody trips over them.

I think when you are a virgin, it's all about surviving it. And learning about radical self-reliance.

What scared me was the weather extremes and also that I might be harrassed by naked oogling yahoos. Like sweaty frat boys trying to hug you to feel you up.

Keep your pearly whites clean. Nothing worse than kissing someone who hasn't brushed or flossed recently.
It's going to be alright.

Lists of things to bring are one of the most useful BM tools I have found. Share your list and then revise it based on (8 yr) experience. Lists combat playa brain, that manifests itself in the madness immediately before, and of course on, the playa.

Pearly wisdom 1: collect many lists from friends and the online world, merge, then reduce.

Pearly wisdom 2: self reliance is great, but realistically, in a life threatening emergency, you are camping with 50,000 others who can save you or would welcome the interaction providing you something you honestly forgot.

Segregate your costumes, accessories, small camp items, street clothes, etc into separate bins or bags...and label the contents therein...another method for combating playa brain.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

bottle of vinegar in a spritz bottle-helps with playa dust and your feet!
There once was a girl, who had a curl
Right in the middle of her forehead
And when she was good, she was very, very good
But when she was bad, she was HORRID

I have a cloth-covered pink and white striped Victoria's Secret mannequin foot. Well, a display foot for socks, I don't think it actually went on a mannequin. I am sorely tempted to bring it to you Fishy. It's heavy and would make a terrific paperweight.

Exactly what no one needs at Burning Man!
