You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

Morning GH. That looks like a wonderful brekie! Sounds to me that you could use a bit of playtime.
Procratination can be an art form
But before we get into all that, a bit of coffee is in order and an early snuggle in the NEB and maybe a bit of a snooze before tennis.
Cheers

GH, my first try was a bust. I separated and acidified the clay and poured a small amount into a bisque fired small shallow dish that I had made of "normal clay". The water in the playa clay was absorbed into the bisque ware and evaporated making a typical cracked surface that one sees on the desert floor. I then fired it to about 1850 F The result was what appeared to be small chips of red iron oxide. I have saved these and when I do glaze firing to about 2100 F in a week or so I will see if the clay will become vitrified. The seemingly small difference in temperature really makes a huge difference in the result, so we will see I will have some of the results with me on the Playa so you can see for yourself. I may have to add a flux or some other element to make a usable clay.

The sediment that drops to the bottom is not clay at all, so it is good to get rid of that. If you fire it hot enough to say 2280 F, it should vitrify. That is what I plan for my next step. The reason that the "stones" that you make are brittle is that the clay has not vitrified. It is sort of in the state of a red flower pot that absorbs water is is porous. Once it vitrifies, the porosity and frangible nature of the material transforms into something akin to glass. So, we'll see. I will let you know of my results. BTW, the dust of which you speak is actually the clay Not a great idea to breathe too much of it ... like none at all if you are still relatively young and value you lungs. Dust masks are very important. But hey, you know that. Oh yes, slow cooling is also very important because if it cools too quickly it will stress crack and become brittle. I always wait until the pots in my kiln have cooled to a point that I can handle them with my bare hands, before I take them out of the kiln, usually about 24 hours after reaching the final target temp. Likely more that you wanted to know LOL
