How will you pay for the playa?
Just wondering how folks are paying for their playa adventure this year. This year will be a combo of freelance gigs and bike flipping for me. Anyone else have some bright ideas?

Shoplifting and breaking into neighborhood cars. That loose change adds up pretty fast. I haven't graduated into stealing old lady's pocketbooks or house breaks yet.
But seriously folks, I have a regular job and this is my end of summer vacation. I just figure about thousand dollars for this each year. It's usually less if I plan wisely.
Just find a retirement home and pick up some social security checks.
Isn't that what everyone does?
Other than that, legal tender seems to work well.
Just have the same thought. Wondering if there are other better ways. Thank you for you leaving this post. Hoping that we could figure something better. something big and wisely. :)

Oh Eric, we have so much to teach you.
Snark classes are at 9AM at Center Camp. Please be sure to be prompt as timeliness on the Playa is considered to be quite customary.
You will also be expected to be properly attired, and ready to learn. This means you must be wearing at least one (1) fur item, no fewer than three (3) hand made jewelry items (see descriptions in appendix A under "gifts"), a bandanna or face mask, goggles. Signs that you are ready to learn include, a desire to randomly hug people even when you are not on E, intrigue and a strange to desire to join in when naked purple (beat-people) come through your camp, and a desire to make college girls cry when they arrive on Friday all pretty and clean expecting everything to be done for them.

Mine is a combination of gifts and working and not going places that cost money. I have different groups I'm a part of that are close to where I work (which saves gas). I don't drink at bars or go out to dinner. I work on my own car when I can. I bring my lunches to work, etc. Then sharing the expense of the trip with a car of people also helps. The other helpful thing is others giving or loaning me things that have been to or they don't care that it will go to the playa.
In actually, the main reason I'm even able to go is I was gifted a BM ticket.

And what should I do? Stay home because of my sources of income? That seems rather fucked up also. It's not like I'm living some opulent lifestyle, I'm making big sacrifices in order to attend on my nickels and dimes.ygmir wrote:that just strikes me as sort of fucked up..............bluesbob wrote:To be honest...

your UE, and tax refund (what you actually paid in and are getting back) are things you worked for paid in, and earned.
A student loan, is something, you'll be paying back (?).
So, by implication (thanking the taxpayers), you are spending either "grant" money, or, whatever extra, that you didn't put in on taxes, on going.
It's only my opinion, but , if you were/are spending money, given by the "taxpayers", for your education, or, to help feed your family, I think it's fucked up.
If, your spending your UE, SL, or tax refund, well, it's your money to do with as you will.........welcome and have a good time.
sorry, maybe I read what you said to litterally.......?........

I have no idea. I buy a ticket when I want to go (it appears to be approximately 4 years on, 1 year off) early in the year, and by the time Burning Man rolls around, I have enough money.
I don't plan, try, save, sell, beg, borrow, or steal. I guess I just spend a little less or earn a little more because there's always a way to do it.

Easy Question! HARD answer!
This easy question requires a hard answer!
I just detour over to Nye County & check into the Cherry Patch Ranch for a week prior to BM. An average week brings in about 2 grand & by the time the week is done, I don't mind all the old, naked, butt-ugly campers @ BM so much anymore (see Casanova's post regarding this topic if you fail to realize I'm utilizing my doctoral degree in sarcasm here...)
(You cannot just drop into the Ranch. Email first, send pics, get approval...THEN set your dates to 'accept your entries' to the BM lay-away plan)

One way to help would be to volunteer for a department that gifts you a ticket. True, that doesn't help you THIS year, but by giving of yourself a bit, you can have your cost defrayed.
And some departments/camps have other things as well for working for them: food, water, showers, etc.
If you volunteered and worked hard, you could attend the following year on a veritable shoestring.
