You dont exchange money on the playa for products except for coffee and ice. Bartering is discouraged, I hear, as well. Go prepared to take care of yourself as if you were camping all by yourself and noone else was going to be anywhere near you.
I'm told you can never go completely prepared, but read all you can. These threads and people here have amazing knowledge if only your willing to take the time to read it.
Hope to see you there.

chana (channa), you have about 2 months to prepare for an extreme camping trip in the dersert. Some experianced burners require many more months to prepare for this trip to Black Rock City. For survival, you WILL need to do quite a bit of reading and research here to understand what you are getting into. You are on the road to BRC, but your basic questions indicate that you have not read much here yet. Unless you are extremely diligent, confident and organized, 2010 may not be the year for you.
There is nothing for sale there aside from ice and coffee as stated above. I have found first timers there in the past with no food or water and no dust protection. They were thinking that they could buy what they needed at a concession. There are no stands for funnel cakes or cotton candy. Art is not for sale, but with the right attitude, you will come home with some amazing pieces that you will cherish for the rest of your life. You will make lifelong friends (in real life) and look forward to seeing them again year after year.
Most everyone who attends finds this to be a life altering experience and others have made it as far as the entry gate and turned around to go home. This may or may not be for you, but only researching here will help you decide.
Read the preparation guides and the first timers guides several times and then try using the "search" feature here on ePlaya. Some answers are difficult to find, but after you put some effort in and can't find your answer, you can just come here an ask away.
WELCOME to this forum and I look forward to seeing you on the real playa when you are ready and the time is right for you.

WEll there's always just plain nervy. Bring enough food, bring enough water, and bring camping gear you need. The rest is gravy. Or for the vegans, icing.Shambala wrote:Unless you are extremely diligent, confident and organized, 2010 may not be the year for you.

I get the impression that if you have an UNFORSEEN problem that if you shouted 10 people would appear to laugh at , make fun of, and fix your tire with the exuberance of a demented pit crew. Then you thank them and offer everyone a beer and it will be the story of the flat tire demented playa pit crew party.

Most people are in a very good mood and would love to help you out if needed.
Which is one reason we tend to get a little hard on people who seem poised to take advantage of that and skate by without proper prep. Sorry you got caught in that dynamic. I can see it as an unpleasent introduciton to the community.
