Please allow me to introduce myself
Hi All,
I am an artist, and glad to join the group after having been reading/studying eplaya for some time now. I heard about Burning Man a few years back, but last year, about this time, recognized that it was something that I seriously wanted to do, that it was something that would strike a chord in me. Of course, the more I hurriedly prepared, the less prepared I realized I was, and so ended up in Camp Envy 2009 instead. I want to thank the live web cam folks again for allowing people to vicariously attend, at least in spirit. It soothed my disappointment.
This year, I have my ticket in hand... and find myself still hurriedly preparing. I am looking forward to the fun, comradery, and truckloads of art and visual expression that are to be revealed in a most inhospitible location. I suppose it wouldn't work quite the same any other way.
I look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome B. VonBraun
Glad you are coming this year. It took me several years of trying and then, on the fourth yearly attempt, things feel into place and off I went. Being very prepared for the essentials of camping by yourself in the middle of the desert will help make more sure that anything that does happen unexpectedly can be dealt with and won't ruin your week.
Hang around... get to know the place. Tell us a bit about yourself and your art.

My 1st year I camped with an established, amazing camp from my home town. The 2nd year I camped beside them, had major shade & organization failure (bad!!). Last year I tested everything, camped at a random location and my camp mates were awesome!!!
Every year I get burn related stuff over the entire year (spreads out the cost and keeps the feeling alive). If you have your basic survival needs taken care of, you will be fine! I suggest reading the survival guide till you can quote it: http://www.burningman.com/preparation/e ... index.html
Don't forget it can get close to freezing (2C), sometimes, at night and it has also been known to be stinking hot (40+C) during the day. (I checked my tent last year at noon and it was over 60C :0 )
You have never experienced art (or life for that matter) as you will on the playa!

Yeah, I wanted to go for years. Lived 2000 miles away, knew no one that went or wanted to go. Finally, moved 200 miles from the playa--no excuses. That you are making it from a good distance- I salute you. From my relatively close distance I have to plan, buy stuff and generally get ready all year. It's great. Welcome. It's better than you think...

Thanks for the welcome.
Yeah, I intend to take the radical self-reliance thing seriously. I figure if I am mindful of that, it will vastly improve my ability to have fun and enjoy a good burn.
I too have been collecting and gathering stuff throughout the year. It's funny, as I look around and come upon various material, it used to be, "do I need this for my art?...do I need this for my house?.." and now there is the trifecta, "do I need this for Burning Man!" It becomes part of one's internal equation!
The psychology of this whole BRC culture thing is fascinating, but I'm not going to overthink that, especially not for my first burn. I leave that for you deep burn thinkers out there to ponder.
As for me, a middle aged dude that loves art, I expend a lot of my resource in that direction for reasons that even now aren't easy to explain in a hard light, other than it is what I am meant to do, it keeps me happy. It is a means to communicate and share ideas. It is at my core.
Mostly computer graphics by day; mechanical sculpture and other cool stuff (my art) by night. Unfortunately, mostly long days and short nights for now. Got to pay bills and still have something left over for the excursion out to become a new citizen of Black Rock City! So thats me in a nutshell I suppose, plenty more really, but that's the basics.
Anyhow, time to build up a little more steam!

Thanks Piney, I wouldn't have it any other way!
Mostly use mechanics as an artform, LeChat. Sometimes robotic like, industrial motifs. It is a sort of reoccurring theme in my work, whether that be a simple sketch or building something out. I haven't had the chance to do a lot of full buildouts in some time, but am in the process of finishing my workshop/building to enable me to get back into it full bore (day job permitting). I'm really excited by the prospect!

I thought you might be the devil.... and I had some sympathy.
I lost 7 years planning before finally making it (you're doing better than me). I was expecting an intense, exciting, life-enhancing experience. ..... It was more than that.
Welcome.
