First Time Momma from SC
First Time Momma from SC
I'm a newbie and I will be leaving my kids and supportive hubby behind for 10 days as I drive my big orange truck and an orange tic tac on wheels (a scamp trailer) across the USA from SC. I am beyond excited to experience BM this year with hopes of meeting some lifelong friends!
mom, wife and photographer just tryin to get by.
All the way from SC across country alone and burning man, you do have some intestinal fortitude! It will become one of the most exhausting yet exhilirating experiences of your life! And to think I was dreading my 12 hour drive into BRC from Arizona. You might consider finding someone traveling the same direction, room permitting.....just for the company.

The camping he is cool with... It is the drive over that worries him. I mentioned I could find someone that needs a ride but that didn't ease his mind either :?
I just did a trip up to Minnesota and back in 3 days so he is confident in my ability but still worried...

don't forget to floss
I doubt you'll be driving through houston to get there but if you are we can caravan (follow each other, enjoy rest stops together). from there to the playa and the playa to there you'd have company.
give him credit. he's confident in you and loves you. he's just worried about the crazies on the road.

We break to remind us how to mend.
Thanks so much FaeTora! Your right on the passing through Houston although it was an option but it would add an extra 12+hrs.
I think I am pretty lucky to have a husband that is cool with me doing this trip.
If you know of anyone in the South east needing a ride let me know!
See you on the playa!
Love the drive and fly out of reno idea Boijoy...think I may have to mention it to him...

Drive/fly from Reno is a good idea indeed. It could be an adventure for the both of you, but this does not help with the trip back. Having someone to help keep you awake is a good thing. There are usually some people who come from Asheville so maybe checking around there is an idea, that is if you're anywhere close.
Hanging out on this forum may well be the best option, actually. You'd be surprised how many connections happen here.

Perhaps sub-optimal on the child care front as well.LeChatNoir wrote:Drive/fly from Reno is a good idea indeed. It could be an adventure for the both of you, but this does not help with the trip back.

We're driving out from NC (we just moved here a year ago from Myrtle Beach, so we're from your neck of the woods, technically. :D ) but are going to do it in two days due to lack of my hubs' vacation days and availability of a sitter for our 2 year old (we're leaving her with the parent) so we probably can't help with transport that much. However, it's really cool to hear of more Carolinians making the trek out there; gives me hope for our region.

I'm in Memphis.
I recommend hitting nebraska and taking 80 out.
I go north from Memphis.
You may have a better route to 80.
And there is no possible way to justify hitting Houston from this far north.
I tried.
It is easier for me to take a separate trip than combine a trip through San Antonio, for instance.

Depending on what day you plan on leaving, maybe we could meet up. My friend & I have never driven out west so we're planning on leaving the Saturday before and stopping to see a few sites along the way. We hope to end up at Burning man on Tuesday.sumosuzy wrote:Thanks for all the welcomes! Hope to be dancing and hanging with you all soon!
@shroom- where in Georgia are you from? Maybe we can caravan out there!
@ygmir_what/who is CFM?
The route we are taking is from NW GA north to I-24 in Tennessee, going through ohio, Nebraska, utah, etc. (lots of different roads)
I used the rand mcnally trip planner. It's free online and you can plan stops and print everything out.

I've been via Kansas and I've been via Nebraska. I preferred Kansas, myself. Seemed like more to see. It was particularly enjoyable to see the Rockies rising up out of the plains as you got into Denver. Eastern Colorado and western Kansas are topographically the same.

So excited! Just received my ticket and a tentative companion for the trip! Will be driving 16 to 24 to 70 to 80 from HHI.
@castallare: Going to power through the drive as well. I have a sitter with my kids and some time restrictions (and lots of guilt leaving them behind) and want to enjoy as much time as possible on the playa!
Not to sure if I am going to get there day of or the day after it all begins... Look out for an orange truck pulling an orange tic tac on wheels... that'll be me - Beep and wave!

Two days? Even if you drove 24hrs straight, I don't see it happening.castallare wrote:We're driving out from NC (we just moved here a year ago from Myrtle Beach, so we're from your neck of the woods, technically.) but are going to do it in two days due to lack of my hubs' vacation days and availability of a sitter for our 2 year old (we're leaving her with the parent) so we probably can't help with transport that much. And the SE has a HUGE burner scene. The Southeastern regional, Transformus, is next month.
I'll be heading out from Atlanta, and am still in search of a ride. It seems as if a few of my burner-friends are flying in, and I'm not sure about the rest. I'll ask around for you this friday when I meet up with a lot of burners for a cookout. And if none of them seem to be likely possibilities, I may still be looking to ride-share as well :)
I know for a fact there's at least one ride open from Colab, as of the Alchemy fundraiser.zeugmatic wrote:I'll be heading out from Atlanta, and am still in search of a ride.
