Dusty this year?
Dusty this year?
Hi there,
I heard something from the rocket people that there was a quick freeze, or a quick drying season this winter, and that there might be an inch of loose playa this year. Any reports so far on the playa surface this year? Any experts want to predict the conditions based on this winter's weather?

Huge dust storms that lasted for hours and hours and hours. Loose dust on the ground that was almost six inches deep in areas, so deep people had a hard time riding bikes. Thats how I discribe dusty. 2001 was a bad year for the dust, but all part of the experience that is the greatness that is Burning Man. I personally liked the rain of 2000
"I only became the Pope because of the hat!?"
well in 2001 I wou;ve discribed it Like San Francisco Fog that sticks to everything, gets everywhere and makes you sneeze or reduces visability to like 5 feet.unjonharley wrote:How do you discibe dusty?

Not to be confused with sandstorms that do much of the same... the dust is about as fine as fog.

Seems like with all the talk about sex camps this year there might be an over abundance of jizz. Hell, the grey water from Hedon Wanton alone ought to be rich enough in spunk to cover several acres if loaded into one 'o them water trucks and then sprayed out strategically. Make a right nice shellac like surface, once it dried.
Or heck, camps could adopt their streets just like porta-potties; put that morning wood to good use and bind up a patch 'o dust for the community each day.
Not that I'm volunteering, or anything. Just a thought......

Sacred stuff???
Whatever. After living in it for 2 months, it's tough to get all dew-eyed about it.
it's DIRT! Made from a swamp...as in Fish Shit.
Either you're into it, or you're not. It can incite creativity or insanity.
It's an alkali talc that demands respect and personal adjustments.
It's destructive.
In the face of such an environmental adversary, all manners of "sacred" attributions are made, given it's such a ubiquitous part of our lives.
But it's still just dirt.
Oh, and this dirt can travel at upwards of 100mph for extended periods of time.

Our first year 01, We spent the night before the event in Alturas. At breakfast we saw these cars&trailer just caked with dust. Then on the way in there were dust caked cars coming our way. And I do mean CAKED with dust. These were the people that helped set BM up. They were getting the hell out of there. At the time I blind to the point of seeing about ten feet. blured. I ajusted well. That's all the farther anyone else could see. ;>) The next to the last day the rangers stoped by our camp. One asked me "well what do you think?" Right back at him I said: " I wanna come back!". I had spent most of the week in a 24 inch hammock with a sliding pup tent over me. Some times our camp was taking as much as 1/2inch of dust an hour over everything. Out there I gain a trust in my heart. Before I had resigned myself to being blind the rest my life. Now I knew The doctors woukd be able to repair me. A month later I was asking "when did they build that?"

Speaking of DUST....
This is gonna be my 2nd year. And my 62 year old Mom from West
Virginia is coming out here to go with me this year - her 1st year!!
(I love it!!! Bless her heart!!!)
My Mom - a BM Virgin....
Anyhoo.... We were talking about a shade structure and she has
this idea of getting a "screened-in patio-canopy."
Hmmm... I'm not sure, but logic would stand to reason that
with the winds and playa dust and all, the dust IS gonna get INSIDE.
Am I right here??? I don't wanna hurt her feelings, but not once
did I see a screened-in patio-canopy on the playa all last year...
Please help me out here, friends. I think it's a waste of money.
Giggling,
Donita from Sacramento

I saw a couple. You could put the screened shelter up. Then cover the sun sides with silver tarps. That would take about three 10x12 tarp. May be a cotton drop cloth for night ad mornings. Put the 12 side up to the roof of the shelter. that waythere will be enough to go around the corners. I used a 10x10 patio cover one year. It worked fine. Good luck. Oh I'm 67 this year.

Now were getting somewhere,,, I love it, "A Winter Wonderland!" thats perfect. We can build big ass structures to sled down and we can dress the MAN like Santa Claus.BAS wrote:Hey! The theme for '05 could be "A Winter Wonderland"!bullD wrote:Freeze it!!! Then we can have one big Antarctica, oh yeahhh...

And we could construct IGLOOS made of huge blocks of ice!!!
Re: Speaking of DUST....
yup! dust will get inside any environment that isn't completely sealed. if your mum really needs respit from the dust she should bring an rv, which will still be dusty from you tracking the dust in, but at least it won't be windy. i would recommend bringing an additional shade structure to shade your tent, though.Donita wrote:....
