How many states. are represented at BM?
So, my hubby and I were just talking, and began to wonder, how many of the 50 states are represented. We're sure the continents are all represented, but how many countries? Are there burners from Alabama to West Virginia? From Albania to Zambia? Shout out, sound off, it's roll call time.

I remember some Africaners (sp?) there..........trystanthegypsy wrote:I really doubt that Antarctica is well represented, though I heard they had a regional burn party there once. How long do you have to live there to be a citizen?
I mean, uh, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Not really a lot of African burners either, I would hazard to guess. I hope there are a few!

South Africa has a regional burn. I think it's pale-skins and not what some would call "natives." I should have a better sense, because I"ve seen footage, but yeah that htink about my poor visual memory may be true.
Okay, 50 U.S. states. Mexican states, starting with District Federale. Oaxaca I'm less sure about. Brazil has states. State of Confusion, Drunken State. Or did you mean "nations."

They are the ones that'll put their transportation up on cinderblocks and drink PBR from 6am to 6am to 6am to 6am etc.Clar-i-ty wrote:Are there burners from Alabama to West Virginia?

Because if it was good enough by Pieter S. By which I mean, Good question, Ygmir. I was using it as a proxy for income and cultural differences. I suspect that the South Africans who do attend are more likely to be of Dutch or English ancestry, than have Zulu ancestors. As always, the question of 'race' quickly becomes murky and I shoudl have more sense than to wade in those waters.

I suppose, I was implying, that, if someone didn't like apartheid, and, if it's supposed to be gone, why mention anything relating?
I'd bet, there are many products of cross cultural/racial unions, that, do just fine.......and, they'd have Zulu ancestry...........
even reverse racism, IMHO, is not ok...........

There seem to be some cultural differences.
I know someone from there with 33 brothers and sisters!
And I hear the big status symbol now is having white security guards. (This is for private homes, crime being an issue.)
And no such thing as reverse racism, just racism.

Oh absolutely on the mixing, even before the end of apartheid, of course. I think that apartheid left deep scars in the people of South Africa, and while the decision to not redistribute the wealth seems to have prevented the a huge hemorrhaging of the former ruling class (and more importantly, thier money) from the country, it has also left many *black* south africans in the townships. I don't know how you get past the outrageous of the past except by talking about it, but you don't want to dwell on it to the point that you're the serbs still fighting a battle that was lost 900 years ago. Sometimes it is worth saying that African Americans are disproportionately represented in the lower classes. Because if you are going to change things, you have to know what the problem is. Anyway, I'm not going to tell you that I'm not a racist; I grew up in a culture where racism gets into your skin big time, and I am scarred by it. I try not to take that part of myself seriously, and I do try and pick apart the knots that still influence my thinking (or my reflexive non-thinking, perhaps) And then there's the fact that I don't understand the complexity of south african racial catagories like "black", "white," and "colored." So, I'm muddling through.ygmir wrote:yeah, it is a murky pool..............theCryptofishist wrote:Because if it was good enough by Pieter S. I think that the burn is a festival of excess, and that people who are barely hanging on are unlikely to attend--big burn or closer and more attainable regional burn.
